Top Braves News

  • Braves' Conor Essenburg: Drafted by Atlanta

Atlanta has selected Essenburg with the 157th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

A prep outfielder from Illinois, Essenburg had a strong commitment to Kentucky, but he'll likely turn pro now. Essenburg was a two-way player in high school and was a good prospect as a lefty pitcher, but he was announced as an outfielder and has a plus arm that could fit in right field. He has shown an ability to turn around velocity and could develop 20-homer power.

  • Braves' Dixon Williams: Going to Atlanta

Atlanta has selected Williams with the 136th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

Williams played third base for East Carolina but was announced as a second baseman. At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Williams has notable power potential from the left side and can chip in on the basepaths. He slashed .299/.451/.561 with 14 home runs, 22 steals and a 16.2 percent strikeout rate in 62 games this spring.

  • Braves' Briggs McKenzie: Picked in fourth round by Atlanta

Atlanta has selected McKenzie with the 127th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

A skinny 6-foot-2 prep southpaw from North Carolina, McKenzie could have pitched his way into the first 20-30 picks this year if he'd shown more potential with his fastball this spring. However, while he would sometimes sit in the low-90s and touch 95 mph, he also sat in the upper-80s in some starts and struggled to hold his velocity deep into games. McKenzie has a dastardly curveball that could be a plus-plus pitch in time, with the pitch already registering spin rates north of 3,000 rpm. His changeup lags behind but should be a fine third pitch if he can get his fastball up into the low-to-mid-90s more consistently in the coming years.

  • Braves' Pierce Johnson: Riding scoreless streak into break

Johnson has a 2.67 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 36:10 K:BB through 33.2 innings this season with a win, a save and seven holds in 36 appearances.

The 34-year-old right-hander is tied for second on Atlanta in holds, behind Dylan Lee's nine, and Johnson heads into the All-Star break having not allowed a run since June 7, posting a 0.97 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB in 10.1 innings over that scoreless stretch. If the struggling club decide to be sellers at the trade deadline and move closer Raisel Iglesias, Johnson could move into the ninth-inning mix over the final months of the season.

  • Braves' Cody Miller: Going to Atlanta

Atlanta has selected Miller with the 96th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

Miller was not expected to come off the board this early. A shortstop from East Tennessee State, Miller slashed .331/.430/.623 with 18 home runs and 27 steals in 58 games this spring. He has an intriguing combination of power and speed, although he hasn't faced great pitching.

  • Braves' Davis Daniel: Fans five in no-decision

Daniel did not factor in the decision during Sunday's loss to St. Louis. He allowed a run on two hits and three walks over four innings while striking out five.

Daniel was promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett to make his first MLB appearance since April 27. He ran into some trouble in the first two frames and coughed up a run in the second inning before retiring seven of the last eight batters he faced. Daniel has posted a 3.27 ERA over 71.2 innings at the Triple-A level this season. As of now, it's unclear if he'll stick around with Atlanta after the All-Star break. There may be room for Daniel to carve out a role as the team deals with a banged-up rotation, including injuries to Chris Sale (ribs) and Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow).

  • Braves' Matt Olson: Drives in three runs

Olson went 2-for-5 with three RBI in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals.

Olson knocked an RBI single in the third inning and drove in two more with another single in the fifth. He was stuck in a 3-for-25 (.120) slump with no RBI over his previous six games entering Sunday. Olson now has nine RBI over his last 17 games but all of those have come in three contests. He's slashing .262/.362/.468 with 61 RBI and 40 extra-base hits through 420 plate appearances this season.

  • Braves' Alex Lodise: Drafted by Atlanta

Atlanta has selected Lodise with the 60th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

Lodise's collegiate resume has some peaks and valleys, and even during his 2025 ACC Player Of the Year campaign, there were some holes in his swing. He did his best work as a 19-year-old playing in the Atlantic Sun Conference and the Coastal Plain League and then this spring in his age-21 season at Florida State, slashing .394/.462/.705 with 17 home runs, a 20 percent strikeout rate and a 9.8 percent walk rate. He hit .295 with one home run and a 17:4 K:BB in 15 Cape Cod League games in 2024 after registering an 82 wRC+ and 25.1 percent strikeout rate in his first year at Florida State. He's an average runner with a chance to stick at shortstop, but he may need to move to third base, where his plus arm would be a weapon. Lodise's lack of consistency in college, particularly his lack of a standout showing as a younger player in a challenging league, should lead to skepticism about how much of his junior-year success will translate in pro ball.

  • Braves' Tate Southisene: Selected in first round

Atlanta has selected Southisene with the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

A 5-foot-11 prep shortstop from Nevada, Southisene has solid or better tools across the board. Most notably for fantasy, Southisene is an above-average-to-plus runner and may hit enough to play every day, although neither his hit nor power tool projects to be plus. Defensively, his speed and athleticism give him a chance to stick at shortstop or maybe move to center field. His older brother Ty was given $1 million out of high school by the Cubs in 2024 and has yet to hit a pro home run, although Tate is a bigger, more physical prospect.

  • Braves' Michael Petersen: DFA'd by Atlanta

Atlanta designated Petersen for assignment Sunday.

The right-hander was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett in late June and has now also lost his place on the 40-man roster. Petersen could remain with Gwinnett if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

  • Braves' Daysbel Hernandez: Sent to Gwinnett

Atlanta optioned Hernandez to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.

The right-hander enters Sunday having pitched three of the previous four days, so he'll head to the minors in favor of a fresh bullpen arm in right-hander Wander Suero, who was called up from Gwinnett. Hernandez has recorded seven holds with a 2.10 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 30:24 K:BB across 30 innings this season, so he's a strong bet to rejoin Atlanta's bullpen during the second half of the campaign.

  • Braves' Wander Suero: Called up to majors

Atlanta selected Suero's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.

The right-hander inked a minor-league deal with Atlanta during the offseason and will join the big-league roster for the final game before the All-Star break. Suero pitched well in 33 outings for Gwinnett with a 1.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 49:10 K:BB across 36 innings.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: On bench again Sunday

Ozuna is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

After a run of 70 straight starts came to an end last weekend, Ozuna now finds himself on the bench for the third time in Atlanta's past seven contests. The veteran slugger has gone 4-for-15 with two homers over his past four games but has a .665 OPS since the start of July and a .577 mark since the start of June while playing through a hip issue, which he's likely to have to manage the rest of the season.

  • Braves' Austin Cox: Sent back to Triple-A

Atlanta optioned Cox to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.

Cox's latest stint with the big club lasted just under two weeks. He made four relief appearances following his July 2 call-up from Gwinnett, giving up one earned run on four hits and one walk over five innings. Cox will cede his spot on the active roster to right-hander Davis Daniel, who was recalled from Triple-A to either start or pitch in bulk relief Sunday in St. Louis.

  • Braves' Davis Daniel: Gets call to Atlanta

Atlanta recalled Daniel from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.

Daniel was recently placed on Gwinnett's temporary inactive list earlier this week for the birth of his child, but he's ready to return to action and will end up joining the big club for the second time this season, and the right-hander will start Sunday in St. Louis. Atlanta has a pair of open spots in its rotation, so with a respectable showing, Daniel could begin the second half in a starting role. Over 14 appearances (13 starts) at Gwinnett this season, Daniel owns a 3.27 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 59:31 K:BB across 71.2 innings.
