Top Padres News

  • Padres' Kyle Hart: Falls to Detroit

Hart (2-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Tigers, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk across 4.1 innings. He struck out six.

Both runs against Hart came via solo home runs -- a Gleyber Torres blast in the first inning before Justyn-Henry Malloy increased the Padres' deficit to 2-0 with a homer in the fifth, forcing Hart out of the game. The 32-year-old left-hander has been up-and-down through his first five starts (21 innings) with the Padres, posting a 6.00 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB. Hart is currently scheduled to face the Giants at home in his next outing.

  • Padres' Oscar Gonzalez: Settling into full-time role

Gonzalez will start in right field and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

He'll stick in the lineup for the eighth consecutive game after going 7-for-24 with a double and two RBI over the prior seven contests. With all of Jackson Merrill (hamstring), Brandon Lockridge (hamstring), Jason Heyward (knee) Jake Cronenworth (ribs) and Luis Arraez (concussion) on the injured list, Gonzalez could be in store for a near-everyday role until San Diego gets at least a couple of those players back in action.

  • Padres' Martin Maldonado: Poaching starts from Elias Diaz

Maldonado will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

Maldonado will pick up his ninth start in 14 games and seems to have at least moved into a timeshare behind the plate with Elias Diaz. The two backstops have produced at a similar level offensively -- Maldonado owns a .572 OPS compared to Diaz's .592 mark -- but Maldonado is regarded as the superior pitch framer of the two. Unless Diaz picks up the pace at the plate to separate himself from Maldonado from a performance standpoint, the playing time could tilt in the latter's favor.

  • Padres' Elias Diaz: Losing work to Maldonado

Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

Diaz was responsible for the only scoring in Tuesday's 2-0 win when he popped a two-run home run in the second inning, but that has been one of the few highlights for the veteran backstop this season. He's hitting just .190/.306/.286 over 50 plate appearances, and Diaz's poor production has resulted in him moving into more of a timeshare with Martin Maldonado behind the plate. Maldonado will pick up the start Wednesday and has now been included in the lineup in nine of the Padres' last 14 games.

  • Padres' Francis Pena: Healthy again at Triple-A

Pena (undisclosed) made his season debut at Triple-A El Paso on April 9 and has given up two earned runs on one hit and four walks while striking out five over five innings through his first four appearances.

The Padres held Pena back at extended spring training to begin the minor-league season while he managed an undisclosed injury, but he's looked healthy since reporting to Triple-A. The 24-year-old reliever could make his big-league debut at some point later in 2025.

  • Padres' Robert Suarez: First to 10 saves

Suarez struck out one batter in a perfect inning to earn a save against Detroit on Tuesday.

Suarez needed only 12 pitches (nine strikes) to roll through the Tigers' 3-4-5 hitters and close out the 2-0 win. He's the first pitcher to reach 10 saves this season and has not yet blown a chance. Suarez is riding an 11-inning scoreless streak to begin the season while registering a 13:2 K:BB.

  • Padres' Nick Pivetta: Delivers scoreless outing

Pivetta (4-1) allowed two hits and two walks over seven shutout innings Tuesday, striking out six and earning a win over Detroit.

Pivetta was dominant again Tuesday, letting just one runner reach scoring position. He's turned in seven scoreless frames in three of his five starts this season and dropped his ERA to 1.20 through 30 innings. He tossed 58 of 91 pitches for strikes in Tuesday's start, including 11 whiffs. Pivetta will carry a 30:7 K:BB into his next matchup, which is projected to be at home against the Giants next week.

  • Padres' Elias Diaz: Knocks first home run

Diaz went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's win over the Tigers.

Diaz's two-run shot in the second inning ended up being the only offensive production in the 2-0 win. It was his first home run of the year and first hit since April 11. Diaz is slashing .190/.306/.286 through 50 plate appearances.

  • Padres' Gavin Sheets: Hits homer after moving up in order

Sheets went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to Detroit on Monday.

For the first time this season, Sheets began the game in the top- third of San Diego's order -- he batted in the No. 2 slot behind Fernando Tatis. The veteran first baseman proved to be a good fit there, as he reached base twice, including with a solo shot to left-center in the fifth inning. Sheets' move up the order was largely due to the absence of Luis Arraez, who was placed on the 7-day concussion IL on Monday. Sheets has done plenty with the bat to deserve being pushed up higher in the lineup, though, as he's slashing .344/.388/.557 with three home runs, 12 RBI, seven runs and a stolen base through 67 plate appearances.

  • Padres' Luis Arraez: Lands on concussion IL

The Padres placed Arraez (concussion) on the 7-day injured list prior to Monday's 6-4 loss to the Tigers.

San Diego called up infielder Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso to fill the open spot on the 26-man active roster, but Gavin Sheets ended up picking up the start at first base in Arraez's stead Monday, while Oscar Gonzalez served as the Padres' designated hitter. Arraez experienced concussion symptoms after he collided with the Astros' Mauricio Dubon in the first inning of Sunday's 3-2 win over Houston, resulting in the 28-year-old being carted off the field and taken to a hospital. Arraez has since relayed that he's feeling well, but he'll be out for at least this week while he recovers from the concussion.

  • Padres' Bryan Hoeing: In midst of throwing program

Hoeing (shoulder) has been throwing for a few weeks and tossed a full bullpen session that included breaking pitches April 15, per MLB.com.

The April 15 session was Hoeing's first bullpen that included breaking pitches since he landed on the IL in late March. The right-hander didn't get into any spring games as he battled a right shoulder injury throughout camp, so he'll likely need to spend some time on a minor-league rehab assignment before he's ready to join the Padres' bullpen. That said, Hoeing could be activated sometime in May.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Shellacked in Detroit

Vasquez (1-2) took the loss Monday against Detroit, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over two innings with one strikeout.

The San Diego right-hander had to be lifted in the third without making an out in the inning after just 68 pitches. Reliever Logan Gillaspie then did Vasquez no favors, as Gillaspie allowed two inherited runners to score. Vasquez entered this contest with a sterling 1.74 ERA and exited with a much more ordinary 3.97 mark. He looks to bounce back in his next scheduled start against the Rays at home this weekend.

  • Padres' Mason McCoy: Recalled by San Diego

The Padres recalled McCoy from Triple-A El Paso on Monday.

The move corresponds with the Padres placing Luis Arraez (concussion) on the 7-day injured list. McCoy wasn't able to crack the Opening Day roster and started the 2025 season in Triple-A, where he is slashing .328/.425/.522 with two stolen bases, 13 runs scored, one home run and 16 RBI in 81 plate appearances. He appeared in 19 regular-season games (16 starts) for the Padres in 2024, all at shortstop.
