Top Nationals News

  • Nationals' Coy James: Taken in fifth round

The Nationals have selected James with the 142nd overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

One of the better pure hitters from the high school ranks, James has a quick, compact stroke and a long track record of performing against quality pitching. He is hit-over-power, but he could grow into 20-homer power as he matures. He has slowed down to the point where he won't be much of a threat on the bases and may not have the range to stick at shortstop. James is thought to have as strong commitment to Ole Miss, so he could need an aggressive signing bonus to turn pro.

  • Nationals' Brad Lord: Emerging as bullpen weapon

Lord has a 2.79 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB in 38.2 innings over 29 relief appearances this season.

The rookie right-hander made six starts earlier in the year with less impressive results, but since shifting to the bullpen Lord has found his groove. He's been even more effective since the beginning of June, delivering a 2.19 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB over his last 24.2 innings while recording six of his seven holds on the season. He doesn't have the strikeout upside typical of high-leverage arms, but Lord could find himself in the closer picture for the Nationals if Kyle Finnegan gets shipped out at the trade deadline.

  • Nationals' Jackson Rutledge: Lit up to close out first half

Rutledge coughed up four runs on four hits, including two home runs, over just one-third of an inning in Sunday's loss to the Brewers.

His lone out did come via strikeout, but it was still a rough way for the 26-year-old righty to end the first half. Rutledge boasted an ERA of 2.08 back on May 6 and looked like a potential high-leverage option for the Nationals' bullpen, but since then things have gone completely off the rails for the 2019 first-round pick. On the season, Rutledge carries a 6.92 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 36:16 K:BB through 40.1 innings, and he's served up an ugly 12 homers.

  • Nationals' Miguel Sime: Picked by Washington

The Nationals selected Sime with the 111th overall pick of the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

Sime is a 6-foot-4 right-hander who features a power fastball that touches 99 mph while averaging 95 mph. The 18-year-old still needs to work on consistently finding the zone but certainly has the stuff to pitch in the majors, especially if he can further improve his secondary offerings.

  • Nationals' Jake Irvin: Saddled with loss

Irvin (7-5) took the loss Sunday against Milwaukee, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and one walk across five innings. He struck out five.

Irvin got no run support in the loss, and all three runs the Brewers scored while he was on the mound came after a two-out error by Brady House. Sunday's outing snapped a streak of seven consecutive starts yielding a home run. Irvin had also walked at least three batters in each of his last three starts. The 28-year-old owns a 4.58 ERA and an 83:38 K:BB across 116 innings heading into the All-Star break.

  • Nationals' Landon Harmon: Falls to third round

The Nationals have selected Harmon with the 80th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

Harmon has a lithe, athletic 6-foot-5 frame and a fast arm that has produced upper-90s fastballs this spring for his high school in Mississippi. His fastball sits in the mid 90s and it's easy to dream on him developing a 70- or even 80-grade fastball in four or five years as he fills out his 190-pound frame. There isn't a lot of effort in Harmon's delivery and he has thrown enough strikes as an amateur, especially for a pitcher his size. His second-best pitch is a slider that varies in shape and velocity, and perhaps his top order of business early on will be to refine his secondary offerings with pro instruction. The sky is the limit for Harmon, but there will be plenty of development needed to achieve his ceiling as a frontline starter, and the risks with prep righties who throw this hard are well documented.

  • Nationals' Ethan Petry: Taken by Nationals

The Nationals have selected Petry with the 49th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

It's rare for a college draftee's highest registered OPS to have happened with a wood bat in the Cape Cod League, but such is the case with Petry, who slashed .360/.480/.760 with 11 home runs and a 20.8 percent strikeout rate in 31 games on the Cape last summer. He may have surpassed those rates his junior year for South Carolina, but a sprained left shoulder limited his power output (10 HR, .590 SLG in 44 games) until he was eventually shut down. Petry was also working on a new approach this spring, as he was swinging more and striking out less (25.3 K% in 2024, 17.4 K% in 2025), and that likely contributed to his decreased power output after he hit 44 homers his first two seasons, albeit with strikeout rates in the 20s. It should come as no surprise that a player with Petry's offensive resume and 6-foot-4, 235-pound frame isn't going to add value defensively. He has a good arm but very limited range in right field, so it will likely be a combination of first base and designated hitter for the righty-hitting, righty-throwing Petry. He has plus-plus raw power, and his 2024 Cape Cod League MVP award points to his offensive potential, but Petry will have to mash at every level of the minors to have a chance to play every day in the majors.

  • Nationals' Eli Willits: Goes No. 1 overall

The Nationals have selected Willits with the first overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

The son of Reggie Willits, who hit zero home runs with 40 steals in 414 games in the majors from 2006-11 with the Angels, Eli is a prep shortstop from Oklahoma who is the youngest true prospect in this year's class, as he won't turn 18 until December. The switch-hitting Willits is a plus runner and has a chance to develop a plus hit tool. He's a better hitter from the left side and the most notable question, particularly for his fantasy prospects, is how much power he'll tap into in the coming years. He's the type of player who might be a 10-homer hitter in a pitcher's park and a 15-20 homer hitter in a bandbox, so the landing spot matters. He'll be young for the complex league this year and young for Single-A (or High-A) next year, so he'll be graded on more of a curve early on, which could also result in him being a massive riser if he exceeds expectations. A fair median outcome would be an everyday shortstop who bats leadoff and is a strong contributor in average/OBP, runs and steals.

  • Nationals' CJ Abrams: Managing shoulder issue

The Nationals announced that Abrams was scratched from the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers due to right shoulder soreness, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Abrams apparently suffered the injury while going through pregame work, resulting in him being pulled from the starting nine for the final contest before the All-Star break. The 24-year-old will have four full days to recover before Friday's second-half opener versus the Padres.

  • Nationals' Andry Lara: Summoned to big-league bullpen

The Nationals recalled Lara from Double-A Harrisburg on Sunday.

Lara will provide some extra bullpen coverage in Sunday's series finale with the Brewers after the Nationals burned through four relievers Saturday. Washington optioned Shinnosuke Ogasawara to Triple-A Rochester following Saturday's game, and it's possible Lara ends up getting a look in the rotation to begin the second half. The 22-year-old right-hander has turned in a 7.50 ERA and 2.00 WHIP over 36 innings in the minors this season but was effective in his MLB debut July 2, holding the Tigers scoreless while striking out four over three innings.

  • Nationals' CJ Abrams: Late scratch Sunday

Abrams was scratched from the lineup for Sunday's game at Milwaukee for unspecified reasons, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

The 24-year-old was initially penciled in atop the lineup as per usual, before being scratched about half an hour before first pitch. Paul DeJong will take over at shortstop, while Alex Call moves into the leadoff spot.

  • Nationals' James Wood: Long starting streak ends

Wood is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

After starting 174 consecutive games to begin his tenure with the Nationals, Wood will receive his first day off in more than a year while he preps for a busy week in Atlanta, where he'll be participating in the Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game. He's also in the midst of a 3-for-29 slump since a five-hit game July 3 versus Detroit. Alex Call will spell Wood in left field in the Nationals' final game of the first half.

... See More ... See Less
  • Nationals' Shinnosuke Ogasawara: Sent down to minors

The Nationals optioned Ogasawara to Triple-A Rochester following Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Brewers.

Making his second start for the Nationals on Saturday, Ogasawara took a no-decision after allowing three earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two over four innings. While he performed better Saturday than he had in his MLB debut, the southpaw won't retain his rotation spot after giving up seven runs over 6.2 frames across his first two MLB starts. It's not yet clear who Washington will turn to as its new fifth starter moving forward, but the team has some time to decide with the All-Star break just around the corner.
