Top Reds News

  • Reds' Sal Stewart: Three hits in Tuesday's loss

Stewart went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in Tuesday's 10-4 loss to the Nationals.

The rookie first baseman extended a modest hitting streak to five games with the performance, although Tuesday's effort was his first multi-hit performance since April 25. Stewart's blistering start to the season has faded as big-league pitchers have gotten a book on him, but the 22-year-old may be making the necessary adjustments. Through 42 contests, he's still slashing .256/.335/.494 with 10 homers, eight steals, 25 runs and 30 RBI.

  • Reds' Brady Singer: Can't keep ball in yard Tuesday

Singer (2-3) took the loss Tuesday, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk over 3.2 innings as the Reds fell 10-4 to the Nationals. He struck out two.

All three runs came on solo shots, two in the third inning by James Wood and Luis Garcia and another in the fourth in Daylen Lile that helped chase Singer from the game. The right-hander wasn't the only Reds pitcher to have a rough night as Great American Ball Park lived up to its reputation, as Washington launched six homers in total. Singer's has issues keeping the ball in every stadium of late, however -- he's been taken deep eight times in his last four starts, stumbling to a 6.38 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB over 18.1 innings during that span. He'll try to turn things around in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend in Cleveland.

  • Reds' JJ Bleday: Knocks in two runs in loss

Bleday went 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI in Tuesday's 10-4 loss to the Nationals.

Bleday had a two-run single in the ninth inning, giving him multiple RBI in two straight games. He's become a lineup regular and run-producer for the Reds since being summoned from Triple-A Louisville a little more than two weeks ago. The outfielder has four home runs and 11 RBI while batting .455 with runners in scoring position over 14 contests.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Dealing with blister at Triple-A

Reds manager Terry Francona said Tuesday that Petty was dealing with a blister during his start for Triple-A Louisville on Sunday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

Petty bit the blister off his finger and continued pitching, but he allowed three runs on six hits with a 1:3 K:BB over 3.2 innings. It's unclear when Petty will make his next start, but the blister issue takes him out of consideration for a start with the Reds later this week.

  • Reds' Eugenio Suarez: Resuming hitting Tuesday

Suarez (oblique) will resume hitting Tuesday and is set for an MRI on Thursday to check the progress of his healing, Charlie Clifford of NBC 5 Cincinnati reports.

If the Reds like what they see with Suarez's imaging later this week, he will travel with the team on its upcoming road trip and continue to ramp up his activities. A rehab assignment should come shortly after that if all goes well. Suarez has been sidelined since late April with a left oblique strain, but he should be able to make it back before the end of May if he remains free of setbacks.

  • Reds' Nathaniel Lowe: Sitting again Tuesday

Lowe is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Nationals.

It's the second straight game on the bench versus a right-handed starter for Lowe, who has an .876 OPS through 29 games but has scuffled a bit of late with just four hits and nine strikeouts in his past 22 at-bats. Eugenio Suarez (oblique) isn't expected to come off the injured list in the near future, so Lowe should still get plenty of playing time going forward despite the consecutive absences.

  • Reds' JJ Bleday: Drives in two runs Sunday

Bleday went 1-for-2 with a two-run triple, two walks and a stolen base during the Reds' 5-0 win over the Astros on Sunday.

Bleday put the Reds on the board with a two-run triple in the fourth inning before being brought home on a Tyler Stephenson single on the next at-bat. It was the second time this season that Bleday reached base safely three times in a game, and he is slashing .262/.392/.643 with one steal, four home runs and nine RBI across 51 plate appearances this year.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Goes deep against Houston

Steer went 1-for-5 with a solo home run during the Reds' 5-0 win over the Astros on Sunday.

Steer extended the Reds' lead to five runs in the sixth after belting a solo home run off Cody Bolton. It was the seventh home run of the season for Steer, who has recorded at least one hit in 12 of his last 13 games. Across that 13-game span, he has gone 14-for-46 (.304) with three home runs and seven RBI.

  • Reds' Elly De La Cruz: Logs three hits vs. Houston

De La Cruz went 3-for-4 with a steal and two runs scored during the Reds' 5-0 win over the Astros on Sunday.

It was the fifth time this season that De La Cruz logged three hits in a game, and his steal in the fifth inning was his ninth of the season. The superstar shortstop is slashing .288/.354/.521 with nine steals (on 13 attempts), 10 home runs, 29 RBI and 29 runs scored across 181 plate appearances this season.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Sharp in Sunday's win

Abbott (2-2) earned the win against the Astros on Sunday, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five across six scoreless innings.

Abbott made easy work of the Astros during Sunday's win, allowing just four baserunners while generating 11 whiffs on 85 pitches (55 strikes). He has not yielded a run in back-to-back outings and is up to three quality starts on the year, two of which have come over his last three games. Abbott will take a 4.47 ERA and 1.51 WHIP (across 46.1 innings) into his next start, which is slated for next weekend on the road against the Guardians.

  • Reds' Rhett Lowder: IL move coming

Manager Terry Francona said Sunday that Lowder (shoulder) will be placed on the 15-day injured list, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

The right-hander received an injection in the AC joint of his right shoulder after an MRI came back negative Friday, and he'll spend at least a couple weeks on the shelf. Manager Terry Francona indicated Lowder is taking a break from mound work but will continue to throw, which could indicate his absence won't be a lengthy one. The Reds didn't make the transaction official prior to Sunday's matchup with the Astros, but the move should be announced in the near future.

  • Reds' Nathaniel Lowe: Taking seat Sunday

Lowe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros.

Lowe will hit the bench for the series finale after going 1-for-7 with three strikeouts as the Reds' designated hitter during the first two games against Houston. Sal Stewart will get a day off from playing the field but will stay in the lineup Sunday as Lowe's replacement at DH.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Not in Sunday's lineup

Friedl is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros.

Friedl has gone 1-for-17 across the past five games and will hit the bench Sunday with opposing pitcher Kai-Wei Teng starting what is expected to be a bullpen game for Houston. Blake Dunn will take over in center field while Will Benson steps into the leadoff spot for Cincinnati.

  • Reds' Caleb Ferguson: Throws back-to-back days

Ferguson (oblique) walked one over a scoreless inning for Triple-A Louisville on Friday.

Ferguson, who also threw Thursday, worked on back-to-back days for the Bats, which is typically a final box to be checked off for a reliever before coming off the injured list. The left-hander has made four appearances combined between Louisville and Double-A Chattanooga. The Reds' bullpen has fallen apart in May (8.47 ERA) and could use Ferguson as soon as possible.
