Ovechkin (undisclosed) is set to play in Wednesday's preseason game against New Jersey, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.
Ovechkin missed the start of training camp due to a minor injury. He had 31 goals and 65 points in 79 regular-season contests last season. Ovechkin is one of the greatest goal scorers in history, but at the age of 39, it's hard to know how much he still has left in the tank for the 2024-25 campaign. If nothing else, the risk of regression is significant.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Skates with non-game group
Ovechkin (undisclosed) practiced Tuesday with Washington's non-game group, per Sammi Silber of The Hockey News.
Per Silber, Ovechkin moved well during Tuesday's session while skating alongside Dylan Strome and Andrew Mangiapane. The 39-year-old Ovechkin has been dealing with a minor injury during training camp, but it appears probable that he will be available for Opening Night on Oct. 12 against the Devils. He could also still see playing time during the preseason at some point.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Takes skate test Saturday
Ovechkin (undisclosed) was able to take his skate test Saturday, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.
Ovechkin missed the first two days of training camp while dealing with a minor injury. He also took part in Saturday's practice. The 39-year-old forward scored 31 times and earned 34 assists over 79 regular-season games in 2023-24. Ovechkin has 853 career NHL goals and trails Wayne Gretzky by only 41 on the all-time list.

Ovechkin scored a goal on his only shot in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Philadelphia.
Ovechkin opened the scoring late in the first period, deflecting a Dylan McIlrath shot past Samuel Ersson to put Washington ahead 1-0. It's the 31st goal of the year for Ovechkin, who scored five times in his final eight games of the regular season. The 38-year-old winger will conclude his 19th NHL campaign with 65 points (31 goals, 34 assists) across 79 games.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Sets new NHL record
Ovechkin scored the game-winning goal in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over the Red Wings.
His tally late in the second period was classic Ovie, as he snapped the puck past Alex Lyon from the faceoff circle to the netminder's right after a Detroit turnover in the neutral zone. It was Ovechkin's 30th goal of the season, the 18th time in his career he's reached that mark -- setting a new NHL record in the process, and breaking the tie he shared with Mike Gartner at 17 such seasons. Ovechkin creeps ever closer to the Great One, with his 852 career goals putting him 42 behind Wayne Gretzky for the all-time record.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Lights lamp twice in loss
Ovechkin scored two goals in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Hurricanes.
The future Hall of Famer struck twice in the first period even though the Capitals were outshot 18-6 in the frame, but the ice remained tilted the rest of the night. Ovechkin is doing his best to get Washington into the playoffs, scoring 11 goals in the last 11 games, but he isn't getting much help. The 38-year-old is just one tally away from setting a new NHL record with the 18th 30-goal campaign of his career.

Ovechkin scored a goal on a team-high eight shots in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Penguins.
Ovechkin was responsible for the Caps' lone tally in the loss, beating Alex Nedeljkovic on a power play to cut Pittsburgh's lead to 3-1 in the third period. Ovechkin has scored in five straight games for a combined eight goals on 18 shots. A slow start to the season has the world-class winger sitting with just 26 goals in 67 games this year. Still, he trails Wayne Gretzky for the all-time lead by 46 goals, a mark he could reach next year with a strong finish to the 2023-24 campaign and a bounce-back effort in 2024-25.

He'd add a second tally (also with the man advantage) later in the frame, beating Wolf with his patented one-timer from the circle. The 38-year-old Ovechkin has reached the 20-goal threshold in each of his last 19 seasons, tying a record held by Hall-of-Famers Gordie Howe and Brendan Shanahan. Ovechkin now has 13 goals and 24 points in his last 22 contests -- he's up to 52 points (21 goals, 31 assists) through 64 games this season.
