Mammoth's Nick Schmaltz: Signs eight-year extension
Schmaltz signed an eight-year, $64 million contract extension with Utah on Wednesday.
Schmaltz is in the final season of his seven-year, $40.95 million contract and had the option to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has 24 goals and 59 points in 65 outings in 2025-26. The 30-year-old's 24 goals are already a career high, topping his 23 markers during the 2021-22 regular season. He has a good chance of also surpassing his personal best of 63 points, which he established across 82 regular-season outings in 2024-25.

Schmaltz opened the scoring for Utah after notching a power-play tally at the 1:38 mark of the second frame. The star winger wasn't done, however, and he set up Clayton Keller's goal at the 8:03 mark of the second frame. Schmaltz is up to 58 points (24 goals, 34 assists) across 62 regular-season appearances. He's very close to reaching the 60-point mark for a third straight year, and it wouldn't be shocking if he sets a new career-high mark in points if he remains as productive as he's been lately.

Schmaltz recorded a hat trick and added a power-play assist in Monday's 6-2 win over the Canucks.
Schmaltz had gone pointless in his previous two games but delivered an impressive performance in this blowout win. This was his second hat trick of the season, as the previous came in a 6-3 win over the Sharks on Oct. 17, and it boosted his tally to 22 goals on the season. Schmaltz ranks second in the team in goals (22) and points (51) behind Dylan Guenther and Clayton Keller, respectively.

It was a shorthanded goal that opened the scoring in the first period; it was also his first SHG of the season. It was Schmaltz's 19th goal of the campaign (53 games). He's not scoring like he was earlier in 2025-26, but he's still building toward a career season. Schmaltz has 47 points, 126 shots and a plus-17 rating in 53 games. Most impressively, he has swung his plus-minus from an abysmal minus-15 last year to that strong mark this season, and he's on pace to top 70 points.
