Colts' Will Mallory: Opening season on IR
Mallory (thumb) was placed on injured reserve by the Colts on Sunday with a designation to return, JJ Stankevitz of the team's official website reports.
Mallory suffered a thumb injury, and he sat out the team's last two games of the preseason. The tight end will now be forced to miss at least four contests to open the 2026 campaign, and the earliest he'll be able to make his regular-season debut is in Week 5 against the Steelers on Oct. 11.

Colts' Will Mallory: Dealing with thumb injury
Mallory did not play in the Colts' 34-6 preseason loss to the Falcons on Saturday due to a thumb injury, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
It's unclear when Mallory picked up the injury, as he was a full participant in Thursday's training camp practice. How his thumb responds to treatment over the coming days will determine whether he'll be available for the Colts' preseason finale against the Lions next Saturday. In the Colts' preseason opener against the Patriots, Mallory caught six passes on seven targets for 80 yards.

Mallory was able to appear in only two games in 2025 in part due to a lung issue, but he's evidently back in shape for football activities with offseason workouts underway. With 2025 first-rounder Tyler Warren, veteran Mo Alie-Cox and in-line specialist Drew Ogletree all returning in 2026, Mallory will have to compete for a spot on Indianapolis' final 53-man roster.

Mallory (lung) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Texans, Amanda Foster of the Colts' official site reports.
Mallory was unable to practice Wednesday or Thursday and is now in line to miss the Week 18 divisional matchup due to a lung issue. The third-year pro from Miami appeared in just two games for Indianapolis this season, catching his lone target for 16 yards across 16 offensive snaps. While Mallory is sidelined Sunday, expect Tyler Warren and Mo Alie-Cox to serve as the Colts' top tight ends.

It's not clear when Mallory was hurt, though it may have been Sunday against Jacksonville, when he logged a season-high 11 offensive snaps and made his first catch of the campaign. With the Colts officially eliminated from playoff contention, Mallory could see more work Sunday versus Houston if he's able to suit up, but the lung issue could throw a wrench in that potential opportunity.
