  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Flops in season debut

Garrett (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Twins, allowing five runs on four hits and five walks in 1.1 innings. He struck out three.

Making his Marlins season debut after starting the year with Triple-A Jacksonville, Garrett didn't fare well in his first major-league start since 2024. Control was a major issue -- the left-hander tossed only 30 of his 64 pitches for strikes -- but Garrett's day could have been even worse had he not struck out Luke Keaschall to escape a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. With Robby Snelling (elbow) on the injured list, Garrett is tentatively lined up to face Atlanta in his next outing but doesn't shape up as an appealing fantasy option.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Recalled ahead of Thursday's start

The Marlins recalled Garrett from Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday.

Garrett will start Thursday's game versus the Twins in place of the injured Robby Snelling (elbow) in what will be his first outing with the big club this season. The left-hander has been fantastic for Jacksonville in the early going, collecting a 2.30 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB in 31.1 innings. With Snelling facing a potentially lengthy absence, Garrett should have a spot in the Miami rotation nailed down indefinitely.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Poised to join big-league rotation

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said that Garrett will be recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to start the Marlins' series finale in Minnesota on Thursday, Kyle Sielaff of Marlins.tv reports.

Garrett will be plugged into the Miami rotation as a replacement for lefty Robby Snelling (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list after being diagnosed with a UCL sprain. After missing the entire 2025 season while recovering from UCL revision surgery with an internal brace, Garrett failed to break camp with the Marlins but has been a lights-out performer at Jacksonville to begin the season. Through six starts at Triple-A, Garrett has submitted a 2.30 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB in 31.1 innings. With Snelling's elbow injury likely to keep him on the shelf beyond the 15-day minimum, Garrett should be in line for an extended run in the Miami rotation.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Takes regular turn at Triple-A

Garrett made his regularly scheduled start for Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out six.

Keeping the southpaw on turn at Triple-A all but rules him out for a call-up Friday to join the Marlins' rotation in place of Chris Paddack. Garrett will likely get his chance to face big-league hitters later this summer, but for now it's Robby Snelling who's in line for the promotion this weekend. Garrett sports a 2.30 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB through 31.1 innings this season for Jacksonville.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Could enter Miami rotation

Garrett could be recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Friday's game against the Nationals, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

He would fill the spot vacated by Chris Paddack, who was designated for assignment Tuesday. Garrett missed all of the 2025 season while recovering from UCL surgery and failed to make the Opening Day roster this spring, but he's responded with a 1.71 ERA and 26:12 K:BB over 26.1 innings covering five starts with Jacksonville. Robby Snelling is also an option to take Paddack's spot, but Garrett might have the edge since he's already on the 40-man roster.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Sent to minors

The Marlins optioned Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

After being sidelined all of last season while recovering from elbow surgery, Garrett will begin 2026 in the minors. He gave up three runs with three strikeouts and three walks over four Grapefruit League innings. The left-hander will likely get a look in Miami's rotation at some point this season, but it'll be Janson Junk who begins the campaign as the No. 5 starter.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Not guaranteed rotation spot

Garrett may not begin the season in the Marlins' rotation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

The 28-year-old southpaw didn't pitch at all in 2025 while recovering from elbow surgery, and the Marlins may decide to be cautious with the final stages of his recovery, either by optioning him to Triple-A Jacksonville, or by placing him on the IL and giving him a rehab assignment to begin the season. Garrett's 6.75 ERA and 3:3 K:BB through four spring innings also don't make a strong case that he's ready to handle a regular turn in the big-league rotation. Janson Junk would likely fill the fifth starter role until Miami deems Garrett ready to make his return.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Sharp in Sunday's start

Garrett allowed one run on one hit and one walk over three innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. He struck out two.

The southpaw threw 23 of 37 pitches for strikes, but while his line in the box score was good, Garrett wasn't able to match the velocity he's been flashing during batting practice sessions in camp. He sat just 91-92 mph with his four-seam fastball against the Cards and topping out at 93.6 mph. That would still be a step up from what he was showing prior to UCL revision surgery in December 2024, however, as the pitch averaged just 90.7 mph in 2024 and 90.8 mph in 2023. After not seeing game action at all in 2025, Garrett has been healthy to begin spring training and remains a favorite to open the season in the Miami rotation.
