  • Rangers' Ezequiel Duran: Optioned to Triple-A

The Rangers optioned Duran to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday.

Duran had a nice first full season with the Rangers in 2023, slashing .276/.324/.443 with 14 home runs and eight stolen bases. His follow-up in 2024 has not been as successful, as he sports just a .256/.294/.324 line with two home runs and one steal over 58 contests. Duran could still play a prominent role with the Rangers later this season, but for now he'll try to get back on track in a less-pressurized environment.

  • Rangers' Max Scherzer: Gets green light to start Friday

Scherzer (thumb) is listed as the Rangers' probable starting pitcher for Friday's game in Baltimore, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Scherzer returned from the 60-day injured list to make his 2024 debut for the big club this past Sunday and was in vintage form in a win over the Royals, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out four. Though he experienced no setbacks in his return from offseason back surgery nor the nerve problem in his right arm that cropped up in late April, Scherzer was pulled earlier than expected from Sunday's outing due to thumb soreness. Per McFarland, Scherzer was able to complete a 25-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, and while the right-hander acknowledged he was still contending with some soreness in the thumb, it doesn't look as though it'll prevent him from making his second start of the season this weekend.

  • Rangers' Josh Jung: Expects to swing bat soon

Jung (wrist) said Wednesday that he expects to resume swinging a bat in a few days, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Jung was examined Tuesday in Phoenix by the doctor that performed his right wrist surgery. While the third baseman has had his activation from the 60-day injured list pushed back a bit due to inflammation in the wrist, he's been told everything is sound structurally. Jung's return has effectively been ruled out through the weekend, but it's possible he's back shortly after that. More should be known regarding a potential timetable in the coming days.

  • Rangers' Josh Smith: Still at third base

Smith started at third base and went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Brewers. He was also hit by a pitch.

Smith gave the Rangers an early lead in the top of the first inning but the offense was silenced for the last eight frames. The HBP was his second in as many games and third over the last five; he leads MLB in that category with 12. It was thought Smith's run at third base might come to end this week, but Josh Jung (wrist) experienced a setback and is not expected to return during the Rangers' road trip that ends Sunday in Baltimore.

  • Rangers' Max Scherzer: Experiences thumb soreness in debut

Scherzer said Monday that he was removed after five innings in his season debut in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Royals due to thumb soreness, MLB.com reports.

The Rangers are monitoring the situation and have no plans yet to move his next start, which is scheduled for Friday in Baltimore. Scherzer was scheduled for a light bullpen session Tuesday, and if all went well, he should get the green light to take the hill Friday with few restrictions, if any.

  • Rangers' Andrew Heaney: Loses again

Heaney (2-9) took the loss Tuesday against Milwaukee, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four.

Heaney fell to his ninth loss of 2024, a total that only trails Dakota Hudson. However, seven of those losses have come despite Heaney allowing three or fewer earned runs, a result of inconsistent defense and a Rangers' offensive attack that's underwhelmed compared to expectations. Still, Heaney has been a reliable option since the start of May, owning a 3.26 ERA and a 49:11 K:BB in 49.2 innings. The lefty is tentatively scheduled to start Sunday at Baltimore.

  • Rangers' Josh Jung: Managing inflammation

Rangers GM Chris Young said Tuesday that Jung (wrist) is dealing with tendon inflammation and classified a potential return on the current road trip, which runs through Sunday in Baltimore, as "ambitious," Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning Newsreports.

The 26-year-old was shut down for the weekend after experiencing residual soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist, and he returned to Texas to be evaluated further Tuesday. Young indicated the expectation is that Jung's inflammation could subside within a few days, so the third baseman's return from the injured list may not be pushed back signficantly.

  • Rangers' Josh Jung: Returning to Texas for evaluation

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that Jung (wrist) returned to Texas to be evaluated and "make sure everything's fine," Kennedi Landry of MLB.comreports.

The 26-year-old was shut down over the weekend after experiencing residual soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist, and he apparently wasn't able to resume taking live batting practice Monday as hoped. Bochy didn't rule out a return before the end of the current road trip that wraps up this weekend in Baltimore, but for now, Jung's immediate outlook is up in the air as he gets checked out.

  • Rangers' Adolis Garcia: Goes deep in loss

Garcia went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's loss to the Brewers.

Garcia gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead with his sixth-inning blast, though the advantage was wiped out on a Rhys Hoskins grand slam in the bottom of the frame. As with Hoskins, Garcia's homer ended an extended power drought -- the outfielder hadn't gone deep in any of his past 17 games and had driven in just one run during that span. Garcia is tied for the Rangers' lead with 14 long balls on the season, but he's below pace to match the 39 homers and 107 RBI he racked up last year.

  • Rangers' Michael Lorenzen: Takes no-decision Monday

Lorenzen allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five batters over five-plus innings in a no-decision against Milwaukee on Monday.

Lorenzen fared relatively well in the outing, though he was pulled after allowing a leadoff double in the sixth inning having racked up 91 pitches. It was a relatively rare occurrence for the right-hander to get the hook that early -- coming into Monday, he had completed at least six frames in 10 of his 12 starts. Beyond eating up innings, Lorenzen has pitched quite effectively throughout the campaign, accumulating a 3.04 ERA and 1.16 WHIP despite a mediocre 55:31 K:BB through 77 frames.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Placed on major-league 15-day IL

The Rangers rescinded Winn's option to Triple-A Round Rock and placed him on the 15-day injured list Monday with right shoulder discomfort, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Winn appears to have suffered the shoulder injury in his most recent appearance with the Rangers on June 17 against the Mets. He was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday, but that move is now void after his placement on the IL.

  • Rangers' Wyatt Langford: Logs RBI in fifth straight

Langford went 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Royals.

The story of the game was the return of Max Scherzer to the mound, but Langford also contributed to the Rangers' fourth straight win. His fourth-inning double plated Texas' first run and he came home on Leody Taveras' two-run single. Langford has at least one hit and one RBI in five consecutive games, knocking in 10 runs in all while going 8-for-19 with five extra-base hits.

  • Rangers' Josh Smith: Goes yard again

Smith went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Sunday's 4-0 win over Kansas City.

Smith tagged Sam Long for a solo shot in the seventh inning, marking Smith's third home run in the last five games. During that stretch, he's 7-for-13 with six RBI. With third baseman Josh Jung (wrist) nearing a return, Smith could shift away from the hot corner and into the DH slot.

  • Rangers' Leody Taveras: Drives in two, swipes bag

Taveras went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI single and a stolen base during Sunday's 4-0 win over the Royals.

Taveras took part in the Rangers' three-run third inning, plating Nathaniel Lowe and Wyatt Langford on a two-run single with two outs. While he stole second base after the hit, he didn't end up coming around to score. The center fielder has been slumping in June, batting 7-for-61 (.115) with five RBI, five runs scored and a pair of steals.
