  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Moved to 60-day IL

The Rangers transferred Gray (foot) to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

Gray was ruled out for the season after he landed on the injured list Tuesday due to neuroma in his foot, and moving to the 60-day IL will officially put an early end to his year. Sandro Fabian was selected from Triple-A Round Rock to take Gray's place on the 28-man and 40-man rosters.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Placed on injured list

The Rangers placed Gray (foot) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday.

Neuroma in Gray's foot will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season. He'll finish the 2024 campaign with a 4.47 ERA and 1.31 WHIP alongside an 86:28 K:BB across 102.2 innings.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Done for season with foot injury

Gray will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to neuroma in his foot, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports.

It's not clear when Gray's foot began bothering him, but he had coughed up 11 runs over 6.2 innings covering his last two starts. The veteran right-hander will finish with just 17.1 innings in the second half due to groin and foot problems. Gray had been slated to start Thursday against the Angels, but Jose Urena is now likely to take the ball for the Rangers that day.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Suffers sixth loss

Gray (5-6) took the loss Friday against Oakland, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.

The Texas right-hander turned in his second consecutive poor start, allowing 11 runs over 6.2 innings since re-joining the rotation Aug. 24. Gray looked shaky from the get-go, allowing a solo homer to Brent Rooker in the first inning before yielding a three-run long ball to JJ Bleday in the third. Gray has struggled mightily in the second half, pitching to a 6.75 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB across 17.1 innings while bouncing between the rotation and bullpen with an IL stint mixed in. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Angels.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Hit hard in return to rotation

Gray (5-5) allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out one over two-plus innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Guardians.

Gray worked out of the bullpen Tuesday versus the Pirates, pitching two innings in that appearance. He was able to stretch out to 53 pitches (36 strikes) in Saturday's start, but he was not very effective and exited after giving up a three-run home to Jhonkensy Noel in the third inning. Gray missed nearly a month due to a groin injury, and he's still likely to be on a pitch count for the next one or two starts at a minimum. For the season, he's posted a 4.22 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 81:26 K:BB through 98 innings across 22 appearances (18 starts). Gray's next outing is tentatively projected to be at home versus the Athletics.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Slotting back into rotation Saturday

The Rangers list Gray as their scheduled starter for Saturday's game in Cleveland.

Gray returned from the injured list Tuesday after missing nearly a month with a groin strain, but because he didn't go out on a minor-league rehab assignment beforehand and wasn't fully stretched out, the Rangers opted to bring him back in a relief role. After Gray tossed two innings and 27 pitches out of the bullpen in Tuesday's 4-0 loss to the Pirates, the Rangers are ready to welcome him back in the rotation this weekend, though he could be on a somewhat limited pitch count. Gray will be taking over the rotation spot that had previously belonged to Tyler Mahle (shoulder), who was placed on the IL on Tuesday.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Pitches in relief

Gray allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out two over two relief innings in Tuesday's 4-0 loss to Pittsburgh.

Gray, who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list earlier in the day, is expected to rejoin the starting rotation, perhaps as early as this weekend. Because Gray didn't go out on a rehab assignment, Tuesday's relief appearance could viewed as a rehab outing or the first step toward building up innings.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Reinstated from injured list

The Rangers reinstated Gray (groin) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday.

With Tyler Mahle (shoulder) headed for the injured list, Gray will come off the IL to claim the open roster spot, and he'll presumably also fill the hole in the Rangers' rotation. However, the 32-year-old righty didn't head out on a rehab assignment before being reinstated, so there's also a chance he works out of the bullpen until he's able to build up to a starter's workload.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Could be activated Tuesday

The Rangers are hopeful that Gray (groin) will be ready for activation from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Gray has been out of action since late July due to a right groin strain and will return without having gone on a rehab assignment. The hurler had indicated previously that he could pitch in relief initially, perhaps as soon as Tuesday against the Pirates. Gray could rejoin the rotation after that, although the impending returns of Max Scherzer (shoulder) and Jacob deGrom (elbow) leave his future role somewhat in flux.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Won't need rehab assignment

Manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that Gray (groin) won't require a minor-league rehab assignment, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Gray has been on the shelf since July 29 and began throwing off a mound earlier this week. While he seemingly has a ways to go before being fully stretched out, the Rangers are opting to keep Gray with the team instead of sending him out on a rehab assignment. According to Wilson, Gray speculated that he could pitch out of the bullpen for the Rangers during a three-game series against the Pirates that begins Monday. Though a Monday return may be ambitious, a temporary move to the bullpen could be part of Gray's ramp-up period before rejoining the rotation.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Throws off mound

Gray (groin) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Gray has been out of action since late July due to a right groin strain, and Wednesday appears to be the first time he's thrown off a mound since suffering the injury. The 32-year-old will require time to build back up to a starter's workload through either simulated games or a rehab assignment, so he'll likely a few weeks away from coming off the 15-day injured list.
