Nationals' CJ Abrams: Returning to Washington lineup
Abrams (ankle) will start at designated hitter and bat leadoff in Monday's game against the Rockies.
Abrams missed the last four contests while recovering from a left ankle sprain, but he's feeling well enough to at least hit in Monday's series opener. When Abrams does return to playing a position, he's expected to serve as the Nationals' primary second baseman down the stretch.

Abrams will miss out on a fourth straight start after he sprained his left ankle late in Wednesday's 6-0 win over the Rangers. The 25-year-old should continue to be considered day-to-day for now, but a stint on the injured list could be considered if he misses more time. Jose Tena will pick up another start at second base for the Nationals Sunday.

Butera said Abrams will hopefully be back in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Marlins after he initially injured his ankle in the ninth inning of Wednesday's contest. With Abrams out Thursday against the Rangers, Jose Tena made the start at second base and hit cleanup for the Nationals. He went 0-for-3 with a trio of strikeouts and one walk in the 2-0 loss.

Nationals manager Blake Butera revealed Friday that Abrams will be the team's primary second baseman moving forward, with Nasim Nunez shifting to shortstop, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Abrams remains at shortstop for Friday's game against the Mets, and he will still see occasional starts at the position. However, his main spot on the diamond will be second base, a position he hasn't played since 2022 with the Padres. The alignment should improve the Nationals' middle-infield defense, as Abrams has long been a poor defender at shortstop, while Nunez is considered an above-average fielder. Additionally, several of the team's top prospects are shortstops, so an eventual shift to the keystone for Abrams felt inevitable.

Abrams went 3-for-5 with a triple, three RBI, two runs and a steal during the Nationals' 10-4 extra-innings win over the Phillies on Wednesday.
Abrams kick-started the Nationals' six-run 10th inning with a two-run triple deep to center field before coming home on a sacrifice bunt. It was the 11th game this season that Abrams has driven in at least three runs, and his 88 RBI lead the majors. He also ranks eighth in both home runs (28) and OPS (.921) and 13th in both steals (21) and batting average (.290).

Abrams reached base in his first four plate appearances, and his performance was highlighted by a solo shot in the fourth inning. The 25-year-old entered the night on a 1-for-14 skid over his previous four games, but he'll finish a stellar July with a 1.150 OPS and 10 long balls over 23 games. For the season, he's slashing .290/.367/.563 with 28 homers, 83 RBI, 69 runs scored and 19 steals across 458 plate appearances.

The star shortstop has swiped four bags in the last five games, leaving Abrams one steal away from becoming the second player this season to reach the 20-20 plateau after the Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong (23 HR, 26 SB). Abrams went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in Sunday's 10-7 win over the Diamondbacks.
It was Abrams' fourth career multi-homer game and his second of the season. The All-Star shortstop is on a remarkable power surge, blasting seven long balls in his last seven outings while hitting .567 (17-for-30) with 14 RBI during that span.
