Yankees' Will Warren: Could start season in rotation

Warren may begin the regular season as the Yankees' fifth starter due to injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat), Max Goodman of NJ.com reports.
Gil has already been ruled out for multiple months, and Cole -- who is awaiting the results of tests on his right elbow -- may be sidelined for an extended period as well. If the latter scenario takes place, Warren is likely to be needed as a starter from the get-go, joining Marcus Stroman as replacements in the rotation before the arrival of Opening Day. Warren struggled in his first taste of the big leagues last year, posting a 10.32 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB over 22.2 regular-season innings. However, he's pitched very well this spring, giving up just one run on two hits and two walks while striking out 11 over eight frames.

Warren allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out four batters over three innings in a Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Warren gave up a solo homer to Max Kepler in the second inning, but that was the only hit that he allowed. The right-hander threw 47 pitches in the outing, 30 of which were strikes, and reached 95.8 mph on his fastball. Warren has been impressive this spring, giving up just one run on two hits and two walks while striking out 11 over eight frames. Warren threw 13 sweepers, 12 sinkers, seven four-seamers and three changeups, with his sweeper doing the heavy lifting on a dominant second start of the spring. With Clarke Schmidt (back) expected to progress to live batting practice this weekend, it's too soon to say if the Yankees will have to dip into their starting pitching depth right away this season. However, Warren has clearly established himself as a high-upside, ascending pitcher early this spring, and he's at worst seventh on the Yankees' starting pitching depth chart.

Warren owns a 9.55 ERA and 1.85 WHIP over 21.2 innings across five big-league starts this season, and it seems likely he'll be available out of the bullpen for New York during the final two games of the regular season. Cody Poteet was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
