The Diamondbacks optioned Mantiply to Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
Mantiply has struggled mightily in the big leagues this season, giving up 13 earned runs in just 7.1 innings. He'll attempt to get back on track in Triple-A, though the D-backs may want to see him sustain success for an extended period of time before inserting him back into their bullpen.

Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: ERA on rise
Mantiply allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one over one inning in Tuesday's 10-4 win over the Marlins.
The Diamondbacks were leading, 10-1, when Mantiply opened the seventh inning, so the scoring allowed didn't jeopardize the club, but the left-hander hasn't executed thus far. He isn't overpowering, so he needs to be precise with location. Mantiply's given up runs in his last three outings, pushing his ERA to 13.50 over 6.2 innings (seven outings).

Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Added to closer mix
In discussing Arizona's closer role, manager Torey Lovullo mentioned Mantiply as someone that could get save opportunities, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. "I don't want to dismiss Joe Mantiply," Lovullo said. "He's really good against lefties. So I don't know what the answer is, but I'll probably go more matchup based for right now until it's the right time to make that decision."
Lovullo feels all the candidates to close, which include Kevin Ginkel, Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk, have thrown well this spring. There's still a handful of Cactus League games the manager can use to evaluate, but this process could play out into the regular season. Mantiply has a 1.35 ERA with three walks and three strikeouts over 6.2 spring innings.

Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Avoids arbitration with Arizona
Mantiply and the Diamondbacks avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.7 million contract Thursday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.
Mantiply finished the 2024 regular season with a 6-2 record across 75 appearances (including two starts) and posted 16 holds with a 3.92 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 59.2 innings. The 33-year-old out of Virginia Tech will provide the Diamondbacks with a southpaw option out of the bullpen for the 2025 campaign.

The veteran left-hander will serve as an opener for the second time this season and the fifth time in his career. Mantiply hasn't recorded more than five outs in an appearance this season and should hand things over to Ryne Nelson after an inning or two Tuesday.

The left-handed Mantiply has limited opposing lefties to a .275 wOBA over his career, so the Diamondbacks will likely hope that he can limit the damage from the Dodgers' usual Nos. 2 and 3 hitters -- left-handed batters Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman -- before he turns the game over to the bullpen. Monday had been Slade Cecconi's turn in the rotation, and the expectation is that he'll work behind Mantiply in bulk relief.

Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Nabs first save of 2024
Mantiply struck out one in a scoreless two-thirds of an inning to record his first save of the season in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Reds.
With Paul Sewald unavailable after making his season debut Tuesday and Kevin Ginkel struggling to shut the door in the ninth inning, Mantiply got the call and fanned Will Benson before getting Jonathan India to fly out with the winning run on second base for Cincy. Sewald will be the top option for saves in the Arizona bullpen, but as the team's top lefty reliever, Mantiply could see further situational chances. He's been reasonably effective this season, posting a 3.52 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB through 15.1 innings.

Mantiply (1-0) picked up Wednesday's win over Colorado, retiring the lone batter faced in the eighth inning.
Mantiply entered to get the final out of the inning against the lefty-hitting Michael Toglia. That put the pitcher in line for the win when the Diamondbacks scored two runs in the top of the ninth. Following a rough season debut (two runs, three hits, one inning), the left-hander has authored five consecutive scoreless outings. Mantiply will continue to work as a seventh/eighth inning reliever in setup for fill-in closer Kevin Ginkel.

Mantiply has taken a major step back this season, accumulating a 5.74 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through 15.2 innings in the majors this season (2.85 ERA in 2022). He hasn't fared well in Triple-A either, but he'll still be called upon to provide Arizona's bullpen with a fresh arm.
