Sabres' James Reimer: Falters in OT
Reimer made 16 saves in Monday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Canadiens.
Montreal scored three times in the first period, but Reimer was able to regain his focus and shut the door for the final 40 minutes of regulation as Buffalo mounted a comeback to force OT. The veteran netminder flinched in extra time though, whiffing on a Mike Matheson shot from the top of the faceoff circle despite getting a clean look at it. It was the first time Reimer had given up more than three goals in an outing since Dec. 9, and over five starts since the calendar flipped to 2025, he's gone 1-3-1 with a 2.93 GAA and a .903 save percentage.

Reimer is set to start on the road against the Canadiens on Monday, per Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550.
Reimer conceded two goals on 29 shots in his last start in a loss to Carolina on Thursday. The 36-year-old has a 2-5-1 record, .911 save percentage and 2.53 GAA across 10 appearances with the Sabres this season after a brief stint with the Ducks between waiver claims. Sabres' James Reimer: Takes loss in relief Thursday
Reimer stopped 27 of 29 shots after replacing Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen midway through the first period of Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Hurricanes.
Reimer ended up getting saddled with the loss, as the first goal he gave up -- a Mikko Rantanen power-play tally that came less than two minutes after he took over the Buffalo crease -- proved to be the game-winner. Reimer hasn't allowed more than three goals in an outing since Dec. 9, and over his last seven appearances he's posted a sharp 2.30 GAA and .921 save percentage but has just a 1-4-0 record to show for it.

Reimer made 31 saves Saturday in a 3-2 loss to Edmonton.
He played a strong game, and the Sabres probably deserved a better fate -- the team had a goal disallowed in the third period after the NHL's Situation Room determined the puck was kicked into the net. Reimer doesn't get a lot of starts, and he hasn't won since Nov. 23 against San Jose. He is a risky spot starter behind the worst team in the East and third-worst in the NHL.

There wasn't much Reimer could do on either goal -- Charlie Coyle got a breakaway coming out of the penalty box in the first period, and the netminder still stopped Coyle's first couple of shots before the puck got poked into the net in a scrum. Morgan Geekie's game-winner in the third then came on a blistering one-timer on a Boston power play. Reimer has seen action in three straight games, allowing three goals on 39 shots (.923 save percentage), and with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in a tailspin -- 0-7-2 over his last nine outings with a 4.10 GAA and .864 save percentage -- his backup could be in line for a bigger workload.

Buffalo took a 5-3 lead into the third period, but Reimer couldn't make it stick, giving up two goals on 12 shots as Detroit turned up the pressure, and he then got fooled by dekes to his blocker side in the shootout by both Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin. Reimer is 1-1-1 in three appearances since joining the Sabres with an .892 save percentage, and he's little threat to Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen at the top of the depth chart.

Reimer stopped 17 of 19 shots in Saturday's 3-0 loss to the Islanders. The third goal was an empty-netter with eight seconds left in the third period.
Reimer started in the second leg of a back-to-back set, but he didn't perform at his best and had to settle for another defeat. He sits at 1-3-0 in four appearances this season. Reimer has had two stints with the Sharks, mostly recently in 2022-23. The 36-year-old made his Buffalo debut after signing with the Sabres in the offseason. He was lost on waivers to the Ducks before ultimately being reclaimed. The netminder is 1-2-0 with 11 goals allowed on 99 shots over three appearances this season. He should improve behind a Sabres team that has established itself as a playoff contender through the first quarter of 2024-25. Reimer's playing time is likely to be limited behind Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Still, Reimer should have an opportunity to start next weekend with the Sabres playing at home versus the Canucks on Friday before facing the Islanders on the road Saturday.
