Canadiens' Emil Heineman: Gets top-line minutes Thursday
Heineman skated on the first line in Thursday's 6-3 loss to Washington. He logged one shot, one block and one hit over 11:29 TOI.
The TOI certainly doesn't suggest first-line minutes, but the Canadiens had six power plays, and Heieneman doesn't serve on the man-advantage units. Montreal head coach Martin St. Louis is attempting to make the team less top-heavy, putting Kirby Dach and Juraj Slafkovsky, two wingers that spent time with the top line, on the second line. Heineman scored a couple of goals earlier this season while skating on the fourth line. It's unclear how long St. Louis will run with this experiment.

Canadiens' Justin Barron: Back in lineup
Barron had one block and one hit in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Capitals.
Barron was back in the active lineup after missing three games due to an upper-body injury. He lined up on the third pair with Jayden Struble and finished minus-2 over 10:52 of ice time. Barron's return prompted the Habs to make Arber Xhekaj a healthy scratch.

Canadiens' Kaiden Guhle: Returns to action
Guhle had one shot on net, three blocks, four hits and two PIM in Thursday's 6-3 loss to Washington.
Guhle returned to the active lineup after missing five games due to an upper-body injury. He rejoined the top pair with Mike Matheson and had a minus-2 rating over 21:31 of ice time. Guhle's return prompted Montreal to reassign Logan Mailloux to the minors.

Canadiens' Christian Dvorak: Helps, hurts in loss
Dvorak had an assist in Thursday's 6-3 loss to Washington.
Dvorak's drop pass to Lane Hutson led to Brendan Gallagher's tally that put Montreal up, 2-1, midway through the second period. The assist was the third of season for Dvorak. The Capitals, however, would reclaim the lead less than two minutes later, when Dvorak's bad giveaway from behind his own net led to a goal.

Canadiens' David Savard: Back on scoresheet
Savard had an assist and five blocks in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Capitals.
Savard set up Nick Suzuki's one-timer to the tie it up at 3-3 late in the second period. The blueliner was back on the scoresheet after having a three-game assist streak halted in Tuesday's ugly loss to the Kraken. The blocks are nothing new for Savard, who routinely crosses the century mark in that category. He currently has 31 blocked shots over 11 outings.

Canadiens' Lane Hutson: Two assists in loss
Hutson recorded two assists, one block and two hits in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Capitals.
Hutson was all smiles and accepted glove bumps from teammates for what was nearly his first NHL goal. However, video review confirmed the path of his shot was altered by Brendan Gallagher. Hutson, who had just one point over the previous seven games, recorded his third two-assist game through 11 outings.

Canadiens' Nick Suzuki: Two points in loss
Suzuki scored a goal on one shot and logged a power-play assist in Thursday's 6-3 loss to Washington. He also had three blocks and three hits.
Suzuki one-timed a pass from David Savard, beating Charlie Lindgren just inside the post to tie the game at 3-3 late in the second period. Earlier in the same period, he assisted on Cole Caufield's power-play tally. The sizzling Suzuki has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) over the last nine appearances.

Canadiens' Brendan Gallagher: Pockets fourth goal in loss
Gallagher scored a goal on one shot and had one hit in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Capitals.
Gallagher's tip of a Lane Hutson shot gave Montreal a brief 2-1 lead before the Capitals tied it up 46 seconds later. The goal was Gallagher's fourth over 25 shots (16.0 shooting percentage), but the forward has points in just three of 11 contests.

Canadiens' Cole Caufield: Scores 10th goal of season
Caufield scored a power-play goal and had two shots on net in Thursday's 6-3 loss to Washington.
Caufield, who recorded his fourth man-advantage tally, wristed a laser past Charlie Lindgren to tie the game at one goal per side. It was the 10th goal of the season for Caufield, who kept pace with New Jersey's Nico Hischier atop the NHL's goal leaders. Caufield has goals in four straight games and six over his last six outings.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Takes loss in Washington
Primeau allowed six goals on 34 shots in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Capitals.
Primeau got the start over a struggling Sam Montembeault, but it didn't change Montreal's fortunes. The Canadiens, who were embarrassed in an 8-2 loss to the Kraken on Tuesday, allowed another six tallies and are tied for last in the NHL with 4.18 goals allowed per game. The Habs next take on the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Facing Capitals
Primeau will be between the visiting pipes in Washington on Thursday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Primeau came on in relief of Sam Montembeault on Tuesday and gave up three goals on 13 shots in an 8-2 loss to Seattle. Primeau is 1-1-1 with a 4.03 GAA and an .871 save percentage in five contests this season. The Capitals have found the back of the net 31 times in only eight games in 2024-25.

Canadiens' Kaiden Guhle: Set to return Thursday
Guhle (upper body) is slated to return to the lineup Thursday in Washington.
Guhle will play alongside Mike Matheson on the top defensive pairing. Guhle has a goal, three assists, 20 blocked shots and seven hits in five games this season. He missed the last five games after he was injured against Los Angeles on Oct. 17.

Canadiens' Justin Barron: Set to return Thursday
Barron (upper body) is set to return to the Canadiens' lineup for Thursday's road game against the Capitals.
Barron has been unavailable for Montreal's last three games due to an upper-body injury, but he traveled with the team ahead of its road trip and will return to the ice in Washington along with Kaiden Guhle (upper body). Over his first seven appearances of the season, Barron has recorded a goal on eight shots while also racking up 13 hits and eight blocked shots.

Canadiens' Rafael Harvey-Pinard: Skating in non-contact jersey
Harvey-Pinard (leg) is in a non-contact jersey at practice Thursday and will travel with the team to Washington, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Harvey-Pinard suffered a broken leg in late July and it was thought at the time that he would need at least four months to recover. He is just past the three month mark and he could be back earlier than anticipated. Harvey-Pinard should battle for a bottom-six role upon his return.

Canadiens' Logan Mailloux: Reassigned to minors
Mailloux was demoted to AHL Laval on Wednesday.
Mailloux has been solidly productive to open the season for the Habs, registering three points, seven shots and seven blocks in five contests, so it's somewhat surprising to see the youngster heading back down. However, both Kaiden Guhle (upper body) and Justin Barron (upper body) are traveling with the team ahead of Thursday's tilt versus Washington, indicating one or both could be ready to return. For his part, if Mailloux continues to produce offensively in the minors, he could force Montreal to add him back to the NHL roster.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Poor in relief appearance
Primeau stopped 10 of 13 shots in relief of Sam Montembeault in Tuesday's 8-2 loss to the Kraken.
Primeau has allowed at least three goals in all five of his appearances this season (three starts). The 25-year-old is fortunate to have a 1-1-1 record while adding a 4.03 GAA and an .871 save percentage. It's discouraging to see Primeau struggle after he seemed to turn things around in 2023-24, but until he gets back on track, he's not an option outside the deepest of fantasy formats.

Canadiens' Justin Barron: Will travel with team
Barron (upper body) will join the Canadiens on their upcoming two-game road trip, which will begin Thursday in Washington, Montreal announced Wednesday.
Barron has missed the Canadiens' past three games, but it appears he might be close to returning. He has a goal, 13 hits and eight blocks across seven appearances in 2024-25. When Barron is ready to return, he will likely serve on the third pairing while Arber Xhekaj, who has dressed in Montreal's past three games, might be a healthy scratch.
