Wallner took Taj Bradley deep in the third inning in what ended up being the winning run. Wallner has been a revelation for the Twins over the second half of the season and has become a mainstay in the middle of their lineup. Since being called up in early July, he's played in 45 of their last 51 games and is hitting .295 with a 1.017 OPS and 10 home runs over that span.

Wallner has been given a few starts versus lefties lately, but he'll begin this one on the bench as the Rays send southpaw Jeffrey Springs to the bump. It will be Jose Miranda in the designated-hitter slot for the Twins.

Wallner entered Saturday 2-for-21 across his last nine games, though both of those knocks were extra-base hits. Considering he hit safely in eight straight games from Aug. 4-13, it's a little disappointing he couldn't sustain that momentum. The 26-year-old is up to nine homers, 25 RBI, 19 runs scored, three stolen bases, 12 doubles and a .266/.395/.597 slash line across 152 plate appearances this season. He continues to play regularly versus right-handed pitchers, splitting time between left field and designated hitter.

Wallner broke open the contest with a three-run blast to right field in the fourth inning to give Minnesota an 8-0 lead. The long ball ended an 11-game homerless stretch for Wallner, and he had gone just 6-for-29 with 12 strikeouts in that span. He's nonetheless held onto a near-everyday role in the Twins' lineup, starting five of the team's past six games either at DH or in left field.
Wallner isn't in the Twins' lineup for Tuesday's game versus San Diego.
Wallner and his career .476 OPS against lefties will take a seat Tuesday as the Padres send southpaw Martin Perez to the mound. His absence will move Royce Lewis into the DH spot while Jose Miranda starts at third base.

With a tough lefty (Cole Ragans) taking the hill for Kansas City, the lefty-hitting Wallner will exit the lineup after starting in each of the past five games. Royce Lewis will get a day out of the infield and will replace Wallner as the Twins' designated hitter.
Wallner is absent from the lineup for the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Guardians.
