With Edward Cabrera (finger) landing back on the 15-day injured list after just one start with the big club, a spot in the Chicago rotation has reopened. Peterson ended up losing his spot in the rotation when Cabrera returned this past weekend, but the former looks poised to slot back in either as a traditional starter or bulk reliever Saturday. The Cubs announced that Peterson will be moved to the bullpen after Edward Cabrera (hamstring) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Sunday, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports.
Rather than shifting to a six-man rotation, manager Craig Counsell will send Peterson to the bullpen to provide the club with a multi-inning arm to replace Javier Assad, who was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday. After a disastrous run with the Mets to begin the season, Peterson had pitched more credibly since being acquired by the Cubs in late June. Peterson held his own Thursday in a pitching duel with Dylan Cease, who fired seven scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts. Peterson was far from dominant, but he finished one out shy of a quality start and picked up his second straight win. The lefty gave up just one extra-base hit -- a Jose Fermin solo homer -- and got nine of his 17 outs on grounders. Peterson was mauled by the Cardinals for 10 runs over 3.2 innings the last time he faced them July 3, so his outing Monday was a promising indication that he's figured some things out. While he still carries a poor 5.80 ERA on the campaign, Peterson has allowed just three earned runs over 17.1 frames across his past three starts to build some security around his rotation spot, at least in the short term. He's lined up to make his next start at home against the Yankees.

Peterson pitched pretty well overall Thursday but struggled with his command as he tied a season high in walks. Even with the shaky control it was still a huge step in the right direction for the lefty after being tagged for 10 runs in only 3.2 innings in his last start. Peterson will now carry a 6.45 ERA and 1.64 WHIP into the All-Star break, and he should slot into the back of Chicago's rotation once the second half kicks off, at least until the likes of Jameson Taillon (hamstring), Edward Cabrera (hamstring) and Ben Brown (neck) are able to return.

After an effective debut for Chicago on June 27 in a win over Milwaukee, Peterson crashed back down to earth in a hurry. Peterson had endured a rough season with the Mets, turning in a 6.09 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 68 innings across 16 appearances (eight starts). However, the Cubs will gladly take all the rotation arms they can get at this point, as Edward Cabrera (hamstring) and Ben Brown (neck) became the fifth and sixth Chicago starting pitchers to land on the injured list Wednesday. Peterson is expected to provide immediate aid to the rotation and could make his first start with the Cubs as soon as Friday at Milwaukee, after he threw 79 pitches Sunday in his final appearance with the Mets.
