Yerry Rodriguez: Cut loose by Pittsburgh
The Pirates released Rodriguez (elbow) on Feb. 22.
Pittsburgh cut Rodriguez shortly after he experienced right elbow soreness upon reporting to spring training. The 27-year-old right-hander previously made 16 relief appearances at the big-league level in 2024 between stops with the Rangers and Blue Jays, logging an 8.72 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across 21.2 innings.

Pirates' Yerry Rodriguez: Comes down with sore elbow
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Rodriguez is dealing with right elbow discomfort, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Fellow hurler Sean Sullivan is also battling an elbow issue and is considered further along than Rodriguez, although it's not clear exactly how long either pitcher will be sidelined. Rodriguez is in Pirates camp as a non-roster invitee, and the elbow injury could effectively end his chances of making the team.

Pirates' Yerry Rodriguez: Minor-league deal with Pittsburgh
The Pirates signed Rodriguez to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Rodriguez, 27, appeared in 30 games at the major-league level from 2022-24 posting an 8.17 ERA and 33:19 K:BB over 36.1 innings. The righty reliever boasts a 28.3 percent strikeout rate during his time at the Triple-A level, so he has some bat-missing ability if he can just throw enough strikes.

Rodriguez breezed through the seventh inning before working out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam. The right-hander has legitimate heat with a fastball that averaged 97.5 mph and topped out at 98.5. Rodriguez, who had command issues (4.0 BB/9) in 13 games for the Rangers in 2023, showed improvement in that area during spring training. The 26-year-old could be a weapon in the bullpen if he can locate his pitches with consistency.
