Athletics' JJ Bleday: Works out of leadoff role Monday
Bleday hit leadoff for the first time this season in a loss to the Angels on Monday, going 1-for-4.
Max Schuemann led off Saturday and Sunday against the Twins following Abraham Toro's (hamstring) placement on the injured list, but the rookie went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts in that pair of games. That led to manager Mark Kotsay shaking things up Monday, deploying Bleday in the leadoff role for the first time. While the slugging outfielder may not seem like the prototypical candidate for the job on the surface, Bleday does have a solid .335 on-base percentage, 10.7 percent walk rate and 18.4 percent strikeout rate that speak to a level of plate discipline befitting a spot atop the order.

Athletics' JJ Bleday: Swats 11th long ball
Bleday went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Saturday in a loss to the Twins.
Bleday knotted the score with his solo blast in the bottom of the first inning, though it proved to be futile when Minnesota put up seven runs in the following frame. The homer was Bleday's 11th of the campaign, establishing a new career-best mark. The center fielder has also posted a career-high 28 RBI, 22 doubles and three triples while scoring 35 runs and slashing .256/.341/.472 through 319 plate appearances.

Bleday went 3-for-4 with three doubles, two RBI and one run scored in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Royals.
Bleday is on a tear, going 14-for-27 (.519) with five extra-base hits over his last seven games. The outfielder's surge has him up to a .261/.342/.478 slash line on the year. He's added 10 home runs, 27 RBI, 32 runs scored, 22 doubles and three triples over 75 contests, but he's yet to steal a base. Bleday has matched or exceeded nearly all of his counting stats from 82 games last year as he continues to enjoy a breakout campaign.

Bleday stepped to the plate in the 11th with the Athletics having already cut a four-run deficit in half, and he delivered with a 409-foot shot to center to knot the score at 9-9. It was the second consecutive game in which Bleday left the yard, and the clutch homer also extended the outfielder's hitting streak to six games. Bleday has impressively laced 23 of his 44 hits for extra bases this season, and all three components of his .243/.315/.459 slash line are career bests.

Bleday lifted a solo homer off Austin Gomber in his second at-bat of the game to cut the Rockies' lead to one run, while also extending his hitting streak to five games.
