Top Jack Leiter News

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Struggles against Dodgers

Leiter (1-1) allowed five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings in a loss against the Dodgers on Saturday.

The Rangers handed Leiter a 1-0 first-inning lead, but he quickly gave that back when Shohei Ohtani led off the bottom of the first with a homer. Teoscar Hernandez went deep for a three-run shot five batters later, and Texas never made up the deficit. In addition to the long balls, Leiter struggled with his control, throwing just 54 of 93 pitches for strikes and issuing four walks after handing out just two free passes over his first two starts. Leiter had been pitching well coming into Saturday, with a particularly impressive 17:2 K:BB across his first 11 frames, so the poor outing against a star-studded Dodgers lineup shouldn't cause fantasy managers to give up on him just yet. The right-hander's next start is lined up to come on the road versus the Athletics.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Strikes out nine in no-decision

Leiter did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Reds, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with nine strikeouts over five innings.

Leiter allowed a run in the fourth inning but was otherwise impressive, inducing 18 swinging strikes on 85 pitches. The 25-year-old posted a 3.28 ERA with a 79:29 K:BB across 13 starts after the All-Star break in 2025 and has carried that momentum into this season, tallying 17 strikeouts while allowing just three earned runs over 11 frames. He'll face a tough test in a road matchup against the Dodgers next weekend.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Shines in season debut

Leiter (1-0) earned the victory Monday against the Orioles, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out eight in six innings of work.

It was an impressive 2026 debut for Leiter, holding the Orioles to just two runs. The 25-year-old also fanned eight batters, a number he hit only three times all of last season. More starts like that will allow Leiter to capitalize on his big upside and build on the 2025 season that he finished 10-10 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 151.2 innings pitched.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Shines in final spring outing

Leiter allowed two hits and struck out six over four scoreless innings in Tuesday's exhibition start against the Royals.

Leiter dazzled in his fifth and final spring start. Most impressive was his work putting away batters and his strike-throwing ability. The right-hander didn't walk a batter over his final 12.2 spring innings and enters the regular season having posted a 3.38 ERA and an 18:3 K:BB in exhibition contests. Leiter lines up to make his first regular-season start next Monday on the road against the Orioles.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Works five innings Thursday

Leiter allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six over five innings in Thursday's spring start against the Athletics.

Leiter faced an overly aggressive Athletics team that often swung at the first pitch, and the righty needed just 57 pitches to get 15 outs while issuing zero walks. Leiter headed to the bullpen for extra work after being removed to reach his 70-pitch goal for the day. He also gave up two more home runs, upping his Cactus League total to five allowed in 12 innings, but that can be expected in hitter-friendly Cactus League ballparks. Last season, he allowed 18 over 151 big-league innings (1.1 HR/9).

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Makes third spring start

Leiter allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four over 3.2 innings in Friday's spring start against the Mariners.

Leiter navigated the first two innings without much stress before the right-hander was touched for solo home runs in the third and fourth innings. He ran his pitch count to 61 (40 strikes) and didn't walk a batter for the first time this spring during his third Cactus League start. Leiter told Kane McCutchen of Yahoo! Sports that he was focused on working on specific pitches, as is the case for many pitchers during spring outings. On Friday, it was his changeup, which he threw 10 times (three swinging strikes) after using it just twice in his previous outing. Leiter has a 5.14 ERA with three walks, six strikeouts and three homers allowed over seven spring innings.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Inefficient start Saturday

Leiter allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one over 1.1 innings in Saturday's Cactus League start against the Dodgers.

Leiter needed 45 pitches to get those four outs, spread across three different innings. The three up-and-downs were a positive this early in camp, but the right-hander allowed three extra-base hits, including a Dalton Rushing home run in the first inning, and he managed to throw just 24 strikes. Leiter also featured more of the cutter he's been working on during the offseason, delivering seven of them, so the results may be less important than the process in this outing.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Introduces cutter

Leiter worked on adding a cutter to his arsenal during the offseason, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. "You're not looking for swing and misses with it, per se," he said. "It's more to just finish at-bats quicker, which is what I've been needing in order to be more efficient."

Leiter is toying with the cutter grip he learned from Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet this offseason, when the two worked out together in Tennessee. Leiter introduced the pitch in his spring debut Monday, throwing two of them and inducing a flyout and groundout. Efficiency has been an issue for Leiter, although the right-hander showed some improvement in that area over the second half of 2025.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Rotation spot safe

Leiter likely has a secure spot in the starting rotation and will not be part of a competition this spring, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

As recently as two weeks ago, Leiter was viewed as part of a crew competing for two available spots in the rotation. The right-hander, who is entering his second full season with the club, will join Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi and newly acquired MacKenzie Gore in the Opening Day rotation. Leiter had some rocky stretches early in 2025 but showed improvement over the second half, when he posted a 3.28 ERA and dropped his walk rate to 3.66 BB/9 from 4.4 prior to the All-Star break.
