  • Athletics' Armando Alvarez: Returns to bench

Alvarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. After being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on June 22, Alvarez was available off the bench for his first three games with the big club, then proceeded to start four consecutive contests. His playing time has dried up since then, as Alvarez has now made just one start in the Athletics' last seven games. Alvarez could be at risk of a demotion when Oakland needs to open up room on the active roster for either Abraham Toro (hamstring) or Esteury Ruiz (wrist), both of whom are expected to return from the injured list at some point after the All-Star break.

  • Athletics' Armando Alvarez: Records first career steal

Alvarez went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs in a loss to the Angels on Wednesday. Fresh off a three-hit night Tuesday, Alvarez drew a second consecutive start and continued contributing in small-ball fashion Wednesday. The 29-year-old rookie's stolen base was a nice bonus, as he's not been very prolific in that category throughout his long minor-league career (28-for-42 across 709 games). Alvarez's encouraging play could continue to allow him to carve out semi-regular playing time around the infield for the time being, with Abraham Toro's (hamstring) recent placement on the IL being the primary catalyst for the former's long-awaited arrival in the big leagues.

  • Athletics' Armando Alvarez: Collects three hits

Alvarez went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI single and a run during Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Angels. Alvarez was excellent in his first career start, clubbing a double in his first at-bat before being driven in by JJ Bleday and then plating Shea Langeliers on an infield single in the eighth. The 29-year-old Alvarez had his contract selected Saturday, marking his first big-league stint since entering the minors in 2016. With Abraham Toro (hamstring) on the injured list, Alvarez should have some opportunities at third base, though he'll have to compete with Tyler Nevin for playing time at the hot corner.

  • Athletics' Armando Alvarez: Gets minors deal from Oakland

Oakland signed Alvarez to a minor-league contract Wednesday with an invitation to major-league spring training. Alvarez is 29 years old and has yet to reach the MLB level, but he put up an impressive .308/.379/.581 batting line with 18 homers and eight steals over 74 games this past season with the Triple-A affiliate of the Giants. He has mostly played third base and first base on the farm.
