Player Outlook
Thairo Estrada followed up his breakout 2022 season with another impressive campaign, though it was truncated by a broken left hand. He returned to slash just .268/.298/.390 in his final 51 games (.272/.327/.434 before the injury). Still, despite playing in 20 fewer games, Estrada matched his homer total and exceeded his stolen-base total from the year prior. His appeal takes a hit in OBP leagues since Estrada owns a career 5.1 BB%, but he's a plus defender and carries dual eligibility into the 2024 season (second base, shortstop). While Estrada's batted-ball numbers do little to excite, he's now turned in three straight years of above-average offensive production. With better luck on the health front, Estrada could reach 600 plate appearances for the first time in his career as an everyday presence in the Giants' middle infield.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Officially placed on IL

The Giants placed Estrada on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left wrist sprain, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reported earlier Friday that Estrada has been playing through multiple injuries recently, and the Giants will now place the 28-year-old infielder on the IL so that he can recover properly. Tyler Fitzgerald will come up from Triple-A Sacramento to help replenish the Giants' infield depth, though Nick Ahmed could see an increase in playing time while Estrada is sidelined.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Headed toward IL stint

Manager Bob Melvin said Friday that it's likely Estrada will be placed on the injured list due to an undisclosed injury, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Pavlovic notes that Estrada has been working through multiple injuries lately and hasn't played in back-to-back games. With the Giants needing to free up a roster spot for LaMonte Wade's (hamstring) return, Estrada could be given an extended break for rest and recovery. Keep an eye out for an official transaction and some clarification regarding his health.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Sitting Friday

Estrada isn't in the Giants' lineup for Friday's game versus the Dodgers, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Estrada will take a seat Friday after going 2-for-14 with four strikeouts during the Giants' previous series against the Cubs. Brett Wisely will shift to second base while Nick Ahmed gets the nod to start at shortstop, batting ninth.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Taking seat Thursday

Estrada is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Cardinals. The Giants are giving Brett Wisely a start at second base and Nick Ahmed will be his double-play partner at shortstop. It seems to be a routine day off for Estrada, who had started each of the previous 14 contests.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Belts game-winning homer

Estrada went 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk and four total RBI in Monday's 7-6 win against the Cubs. Estrada was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning to give San Francisco its first lead, though Chicago quickly re-took the lead in the bottom of the frame. The Giants remained behind until the ninth, when Estrada blasted a three-run homer that proved to be the game-winning hit. The long ball snapped a 20-game homerless stretch for the infielder. With nine home runs on the season, Estrada is five away from tying his career-high mark.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Racks up three hits in win

Estrada went 3-for-6 with a double, one RBI and one run scored in Wednesday's 9-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Estrada missed three games with a jammed thumb to begin June, but he's been strong at the plate on both sides of that minor injury. This was his fourth multi-hit effort in his last six games. The second baseman is up to a .250/.282/.417 slash line with eight home runs, one stolen base, 32 RBI and 33 runs scored over 59 contests this season. The Giants' lineup has been in flux for much of the year due to numerous injuries, but Estrada's been a near-constant presence even amid his early struggles.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Returning to action Tuesday

Estrada (thumb) is starting at second base and batting second Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. Estrada sat out the previous three games with a jammed thumb but is ready to take the field Tuesday in Arizona. The 28-year-old finished May on a modest four-game hit streak and went 7-for-17 with a double, an RBI and a run during that span.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Not starting Monday

Estrada (thumb) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against Arizona, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Estrada will miss a third consecutive game after jamming his thumb Friday against the Mets. Brett Wisely will start at second base Monday and bat in the leadoff spot against Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Dealing with jammed thumb

Estrada is considered day-to-day after jamming his thumb during Friday's game against the Yankees, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Saturday's absence from the lineup is more than just a day off for the second baseman, who suffered a minor thumb injury in the series opener against New York. Estrada was deemed day-to-day and won't have the benefit of a team-wide rest day until Thursday. If Estrada is forced to miss more time, Brett Wisely would likely fill the gap at second.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Idle Saturday

Estrada is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Estrada will get his first day off since May 12, a well-earned break after generating seven hits across his last four starts. Brett Wisely will play second and bat ninth.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Homers in Tuesday's loss

Estrada went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk, an additional RBI and two total runs scored in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Pirates. Estrada has two homers and eight RBI while batting .333 (7-for-21) over his last five games. The second baseman is up to a .250/.275/.444 slash line with eight homers, 29 RBI, 26 runs scored and one stolen base through 48 contests. He's easily on pace to surpass the 14 homers he hit in each of the last two years, though his increased power has come with the small price of less contact and slightly poorer plate discipline -- he's posted a 3.2 percent walk rate, his lowest in four years as a Giant.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Turns game around with homer

Estrada went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and three total runs scored in Friday's 10-5 win over the Rockies. Estrada's fifth-inning blast put the Giants ahead for the first time in the contest, and they held the lead the rest of the way. The second baseman had gone 4-for-22 (.182) over his previous six contests, though he had a pair of extra-base hits in that span. Estrada is up to an acceptable .250/.274/.435 slash line with seven homers, 24 RBI, 21 runs scored, eight doubles, one triple and one stolen base through 175 plate appearances in a starting role this season.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Sitting for series finale

Estrada is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Reds, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Estrada will sit for the first time since April 26, and Brett Wisely will start at second base Sunday against Reds right-hander Frankie Montas. Estrada is slashing .295/.340/.477 with two home runs and eight RBI in May.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Homers in Friday's loss

Estrada went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Reds. Estrada is enjoying a strong start to May, hitting safely in eight of his 10 games this month. He's gone 12-for-40 (.300) in that span, adding two homers and eight RBI. The second baseman has a .248/.276/.434 slash line with six homers, 21 RBI, 17 runs scored and one stolen base through 39 contests overall. Estrada is on pace for a career year in homers, but his overall performance is down and the Giants' weak offense hasn't helped him rack up counting stats.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Leaves yard Sunday

Estrada went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Phillies. Estrada gave the Giants some late life with a two-run blast in the seventh off Taijuan Walker, which ultimately knocked him from the game. The 28-year-old is riding a five-game hit streak and has six RBI over his last four games. In 12 games since April 21, Estrada is slashing .333/.364/.595 with two homers, nine RBI, six runs and a 1:5 BB:K.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Three hits in loss

Estrada went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored in Saturday's 14-3 loss to the Phillies. Estrada has found some consistency in May, going 7-for-17 (.412) over the first four games of the month. He's added two doubles and four RBI in that short stretch. He started slowly, but the second baseman is now up to a respectable .254/.270/.426 slash line with four home runs, 17 RBI, 13 runs scored, one stolen base, seven doubles and one triple over 126 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Logs first steal

Estrada went 0-for-3 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 4-0 loss to the Red Sox. Estrada reached on an error and recorded his first steal of the year to get into scoring position, though he was left on base. Considering he logged a combined 44 steals over the previous two seasons, it's unusual that he's been less active on the basepaths. It doesn't help that he's batting just .229 with a .248 on-base percentage for the year, though those numbers improve to .291 and .316, respectively, over the last 16 games. Estrada is still seeing a starting role at second base despite the early struggles, while Tyler Fitzgerald remains in more of a bench role.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Opens scoring with homer

Estrada went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Pirates. Estrada opened the scoring when he took Jared Jones deep in the third inning. Estrada has gone 2-for-7 over two games since he recovered from a minor hamstring issue. The second baseman is slashing a modest .235/.255/.422 with four homers, 13 RBI, 12 runs scored and no stolen bases through 28 contests. His power is in line with previous years, but Estrada logged 20-plus steals in both 2022 and 2023, so it's a little unusual to see him getting less involved on the basepaths.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Returns to lineup

Estrada (hamstring) is starting at second base and batting eighth Saturday against the Pirates, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Hamstring tightness forced Estrada out of Wednesday's game against the Mets and prevented him from starting Friday, but it seems to no longer be a problem heading into Saturday's contest. The 28-year-old has gone 4-for-16 with two RBI and three runs scored across his last five games.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Not starting Friday

Estrada (hamstring) is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Estrada went 0-for-2 in Wednesday's game against the Mets before being pulled due to left hamstring tightness. The Giants had an off day Thursday, but the 28-year-old will sit out for at least one more game while managing his injury. Tyler Fitzgerald will start at second base Friday and bat eighth against Pirates right-hander Quinn Priester.
