Player Outlook
Kevin Kiermaier proved to be a good fit in Toronto last season and will return to the club on a one-year, $10 million deal for 2024. While not known for his durability, Kiermaier appeared in 129 games last season, matching the second-highest total of his career. His .419 SLG was his highest mark since 2017 and Kiermaier provided value on the bases, swiping 14 bags in 15 tries. He won a Gold Glove in center field last season at 33 years old -- his fourth Gold Glove -- and added multiple catches to his silly career highlight reel. That defense will keep him on the field, and Kiermaier handles himself well enough against lefty pitching to avoid a strict platoon, though health remains a big concern. If he manages to stay upright, a return to double-digit homers and steals is not out of the question.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Hits homer in loss

Kiermaier went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Mariners. Kiermaier got Toronto on the board in the sixth inning, but his homer was the team's lone run. The outfielder appears to be in a timeshare in center field with Daulton Varsho, though Kiermaier's main attribute is his defense. For the year, Kiermaier sports a .191/.234/.299 slash line with three homers, 13 RBI, 17 runs scored and five stolen bases across 171 plate appearances.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Returns to bench role

Kiermaier is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros. Kiermaier had started both of the Blue Jays' final two games of the weekend series with the Yankees and six of the last eight contests overall, but he looks set to fill more of a fourth-outfielder role moving forward. His recent uptick in playing time was due in part to Daulton Varsho missing out on three straight starts due to a back injury, but Varsho returned to action Thursday.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Filling in for Varsho again

Kiermaier will start in center field and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Kiermaier will pick up his fifth consecutive start Wednesday, though Daulton Varsho is on the bench with a back injury for a fourth day in a row. The 34-year-old Kiermaier at least showed some signs of life at the plate with a three-hit performance in Tuesday's 9-4 win, and another strong game Wednesday could put him back in the mix for more playing time in the outfield even after Varsho returns. Varsho could slide over to left field to make room for Kiermaier in center on a more frequent basis if the Blue Jays choose to scale back the playing time of Davis Schneider, who is hitting .135 dating back to June 6.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Three hits in Tuesday's win

Kiermaier went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in Tuesday's win over the Red Sox. Getting the start in center field and batting ninth, Kiermaier produced his first multi-hit performance since May 8. The veteran defensive whiz came into the game slashing a woeful .111/.135/.194 over 38 plate appearances in June with a 46.2-percent strikeout rate, and only a recent back issue for Daulton Varsho has given Kiermaier consistent starts again. He remains a long way from fantasy utility, even in deep formats.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Filling in for banged-up Varsho

Kiermaier will start in center field and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Red Sox. Kiermaier will get a third consecutive start, but he'll most likely be the odd man out of the Toronto outfield once Daulton Varsho (back) -- who is out of the lineup for a second straight day -- returns to action. Since returning from the injured list May 4, Kiermaier is slashing .177/.224/.329 over a stretch of 35 games.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Back in lineup Saturday

Kiermaier (knee) will start in center field and bat ninth Saturday versus Cleveland, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Kiermaier will be back in center field after being held out of the starting lineup for two consecutive games with a bruised knee. The 34-year-old has struggled to a .125 average with a solo home run over 16 at-bats in June.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Idle again Friday

Kiermaier (knee) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Guardians. Kiermaier will be held out of the starting lineup for a second consecutive game after sustaining a bruised knee Tuesday. However, with a left-handed pitcher on the mound for Cleveland, it's unlikely that the lefty-hitting center fielder would've been in the lineup even if fully healthy. Davis Schneider, Daulton Varsho and George Springer will fill the outfield from left to right Friday.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: On bench Wednesday

Kiermaier (knee) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers. Kiermaier exited Tuesday's 3-0 win with a bruised right knee, and the Blue Jays and Brewers are concluding their series with a day game after a night game, so the veteran outfielder's absence doesn't come as a major surprise. With the benefit of a team off day Thursday, Kiermaier could be cleared to play in this weekend's series versus the Guardians, though he may be viewed as more of a part-time player these days while he's hitting just .200 with a career-worst .565 OPS on the season.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Exits with bruised knee

Kiermaier was removed from Tuesday's game against the Brewers due to a right knee contusion, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Kiermaier fouled a ball off his knee in the fourth inning and eventually came out of the game in the seventh. Because the Jays are only calling his injury a bruise, it's likely he avoided a serious injury, but it's possible the 34-year-old sits out a game or two in order to heal.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Not in Toronto lineup

Kiermaier is absent from the lineup for Monday's game versus the Brewers. The domino effect of Spencer Horwitz getting regular reps at second base could impact Kiermaier, as it means more Davis Schneider in left field Daulton Varsho in center, which is how the Blue Jays have things set up Monday. Kiermaier is just 3-for-25 at the plate over his last 10 contests.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Taking seat Thursday

Kiermaier isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Orioles. The Orioles have left-hander Cade Povich on the bump, so the lefty-hitting Kiermaier will begin the game on the bench. Daulton Varsho will cover center field and Davis Schneider will be in left field for the Blue Jays.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Sitting again

Kiermaier is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Orioles. Kiermier is sitting for the third time in the last four games despite the Blue Jays facing a right-handed pitcher. Daulton Varsho will slide to center field Tuesday, while Davis Schneider and George Springer fill the corners.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Out against righty again

Kiermaier is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. The lefty-hitting Kiermaier will sit for the second straight matchup against a right-hander (Quinn Priester), perhaps signaling that the veteran's hold on a regular role in the outfield could be tenuous. Daniel Vogelbach has been included in the lineup at designated hitter in both of the past two games at Kiermaier's expense, while Toronto has rolled out outfields of Davis Schneider, Daulton Varsho and George Springer from left to right. Kiermaier is hitting just .212 with a .265 on-base percentage across 116 plate appearances on the season.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Day off Saturday

Kiermaier is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Pirates. Kiermaier will get a breather after he went 1-for-11 with an RBI, a run scored, two stolen bases and four strikeouts while starting the last three games. Daulton Varsho will slide over to center field while Cavan Biggio enters the lineup at second base after some shuffling, batting ninth against Pittsburgh.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Out against right-hander

Kiermaier is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the White Sox. The Blue Jays are facing a right-hander in Nick Nastrini, but the left-handed hitting Kiermaier will nonetheless begin the game on the bench for a second straight day. Daulton Varsho will occupy center field, Davis Schneider will be in left and Cavan Biggio will cover second base.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Taking seat Sunday

Kiermaier is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. Kiermaier has an .861 OPS in 36 at-bats since he returned from a hip injury in early May, and he'll sit Sunday after starting the previous four games. Daulton Varsho will shift to center field while Davis Schneider moves to left.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Sitting Tuesday

Kiermaier is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the White Sox. Kiermaier will dodge a matchup with the left-handed Garrett Crochet. Instead, Davis Schneider, Daulton Varsho and George Springer will fill the outfield Tuesday.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Out of lineup Friday

Kermaier is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against Tampa Bay. The left-handed batter will start from the dugout with the Blue Jays facing southpaw Tyler Alexander. Daulton Varsho will start in center field and bat seventh in place of Kiermaier with Davis Schneider and George Springer rounding out Toronto's outfield.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Rejoining lineup Tuesday

Kiermaier (illness) will start in center field and bat ninth in Tuesday's game at Baltimore. Kiermaier sat out the previous four games due to an illness but is back in action for Tuesday's contest. The 34-year-old has played in just three games since he returned from the injured list May 4 and has gone 4-for-10 with a homer and four RBI.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Out again Monday

Kiermaier (illness) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Orioles. Kiermaier will miss out on a fourth consecutive start while he's apparently still under the weather, but he was able to make an appearance as a late-inning defensive replacement in Saturday's 10-8 win over the Twins. He'll presumably be available off the bench again Monday, provided he hasn't experienced any setbacks in his recovery from the ailment. Daulton Varsho will cover center field in Kiermaier's stead in the series opener in Baltimore.
