  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Remaining on bench Wednesday

Hoskins is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Since the calendar flipped to April, Hoskins has slashed just .152/.222/.333 with a 27.8 percent strikeout rate over nine games. As a result of his ongoing struggles, Hoskins will be left out of the lineup for the second straight day, with both of his absences coming against right-handed starting pitchers. Hoskins should still be a mainstay in the starting nine versus southpaws, but Guardians manager Stephen Vogt may prefer to use Kyle Manzardo at first base and a rotation of players at the designated-hitter spot against righties.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Out of Tuesday's lineup

Hoskins is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals. Hoskins started the previous eight games and will head to the bench after going 5-for-29 (.172 average) with three doubles, a homer, four RBI and five runs during that span. Chase DeLauter is serving as the designated hitter Tuesday while George Valera picks up a start in the outfield.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Goes deep in loss

Hoskins went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 13-1 loss to Atlanta. Hoskins accounted for the Guardians' lone run with a sixth-inning blast, his first home run of the season. Following a bumpy start, Hoskins has RBI in four consecutive contests, while going 5-for-16 with four extra-base hits. He's slashing .231/.333/.436 over 12 games played.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Bangs out three doubles Wednesday

Hoskins went 3-for-4 with three doubles, a run scored and an RBI in Wednesday's 10-2 win over the Royals. The veteran first baseman is still looking for his first homer with the Guardians, but it's only a matter of time. Hoskins has gone 7-for-27 (.259) through nine appearances, and five of those hits have been two-baggers to go along with three runs, two RBI and a 6:12 BB:K.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Not in Friday's lineup

Hoskins is absent from the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs. The Guardians have faced all right-handers so far, but Hoskins has still been in the lineup four times in eight tilts. Kyle Manzardo will cover first base Friday and Chase DeLauter is getting a start at designated hitter.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Sitting again Monday

Hoskins is not in the Guardians' starting lineup against the Dodgers on Monday. Hoskins opened the regular season strongly, going 3-for-3 with one double and one run scored against the Mariners on Thursday before following that up with an 0-for-3 performance with two strikeouts Friday. He will not be in the Guardians' lineup for a third consecutive game, with Kyle Manzardo starting at first base while Chase DeLauter serves as the designated hitter for Monday's series opener.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Idle Sunday

Hoskins isn't in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners. Hoskins will sit down for a second consecutive game after going 3-for-6 with two walks and a run scored over the first two games of the series. • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Sitting down Saturday

Hoskins isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Seattle. Hoskins will get a chance to catch his breath after going 3-for-6 with a run scored and a pair of walks over the first two games of the season. His absence will put Kyle Manzardo at first base and open a spot in the lineup for Angel Martinez to start in left field.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Officially added to roster

The Guardians selected Hoskins' contract to the major-league roster Wednesday. Hoskins joined Cleveland on a minor-league contract in February and earned a spot on the Opening Day roster with an .817 OPS and three homers during spring training. The 33-year-old is expected to split playing time between first base and designated hitter with Kyle Manzardo.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Secures roster spot

Hoskins will be included on the Guardians' Opening Day roster, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. The veteran slugger still needs to be officially added to the active roster ahead of Thursday's season opener in Seattle. Hoskins had an .817 OPS with three homers in 12 spring training games after spending last season in Milwaukee, where he played in 90 regular-season contests and had a .237/.332/.416 slash line.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Belts first spring homer

Hoskins started at first base and went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI in Saturday's spring game against San Diego. Hoskins, who served as the designated hitter in his first four Cactus League appearances, made his first start in the field. His first at-bat was an epic 13-pitch battle with Padres starter Michael King that ended in a strikeout. Two innings later, he took King deep on a first-pitch fastball for his first spring homer, a two-run shot. An inning later, the first baseman singled in another two runs. Until Saturday, Hoskins was having a difficult spring, going 1-for-12 while striking out seven times.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Debuts for Guards

Hoskins served as the designated hitter and went 0-for-2 with a walk in Friday's spring game against the Cubs. Hoskins made his debut in a Guardians uniform Friday and helped spur a rally with his seventh-inning free pass. It looked like he'd struck out a third time on 3-2 pitch leading off the inning, but Hoskins challenged the ruling, and ABS reversed the call for a walk. Cleveland went on to score five times.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Ready for debut

Hoskins is expected to serve as the designated hitter in Friday's spring game against the Cubs, pending final check-ins with the team's medical staff, Joe Noga of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Hoskins was signed to a minor-league contract last weekend and is expected to be added to the 40-man roster and be part of the Opening Day roster. He and Kyle Manzardo are expected to share first base during the regular season.

  • Guardians' Rhys Hoskins: Lands minors deal with Cleveland

Hoskins agreed to a minor-league contract with the Guardians on Sunday that includes an invitation to spring training, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. According to Zack Meisel of The Athletic, the contract will pay Hoskins a base salary of $1.5 million should he make the major-league roster, which seems likely. Hoskins missed extended time last season with a Grade 2 thumb sprain, but he has been above league average by wRC+ every season of his career. He will compete for time at first base and designated hitter with Cleveland.

  • Rhys Hoskins: Joining Cleveland

Hoskins was seen in the Guardians' clubhouse Sunday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. The move has not been officially announced, but it's believed to be a minor-league contract with a base salary of $1.5 million if he makes the major-league roster. Hoskins already has his own locker and was even in Guardians gear Sunday, per Zack Meisel of The Athletic. Hoskins slashed .237/.332/.416 with 12 homers and 43 RBI in 90 regular-season games with Milwaukee last season, leading the Brewers to decline his mutual option for 2026.

  • Rhys Hoskins: Mutual option declined

Hoskins became a free agent Tuesday after his $18 million mutual option for 2026 with the Brewers was declined, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports. The Brewers will pay Hoskins a $4 million buyout instead. Hoskins slashed .223/.314/.418 with 38 home runs over 845 plate appearances during his two seasons in Milwaukee. With Andrew Vaughn's emergence at first base in 2025 and Christian Yelich serving as the primary designated hitter, there was no room for Hoskins on the roster in 2026. Hoskins will turn 33 in March and is a poor defensive first baseman, so he might face a fairly limited free-agent market this offseason.

  • Brewers' Rhys Hoskins: Activated from 10-day IL

The Brewers activated Hoskins (thumb) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Hoskins has missed more than two months of action with a left thumb sprain but is ready to go after slashing .275/.371/.471 with two home runs over 14 rehab games. The 32-year-old is no longer at the top of the Brewers' first-base depth chart following the emergence of Andrew Vaughn, but Hoskins should still see a decent number of starts between first base and designated hitter.

  • Brewers' Rhys Hoskins: Expected to be activated Tuesday

Hoskins (thumb) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Hoskins has joined the Brewers in Texas for the start of their three-game set against the Rangers but won't officially be back on the active roster until the second game of the series. The 32-year-old slashed .275/.371/.471 with two home runs over 14 contests on his rehab assignment. Hoskins -- who is coming back from a left thumb sprain -- appears likely to be behind Andrew Vaughn on the Brewers' first-base depth chart, but Christian Yelich's ongoing back issues could create a path to at-bats for Hoskins at designated hitter.

  • Brewers' Rhys Hoskins: Out until at least late August

The Brewers announced Tuesday that the goal is for Hoskins (thumb) to begin rehab assignment in late August, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The veteran first baseman landed on the shelf in early July due to a Grade 2 thumb sprain, and his initial return timeline was about 6-to-8 weeks. Hoskins now appears to be trending toward the back end of that timeline, but he could still be activated before the end of August, depending on how long of a rehab stint he requires.

  • Brewers' Rhys Hoskins: Out until mid-to-late August

The Brewers announced Tuesday that Hoskins (thumb) is hoping to return from the 10-day injured list by mid-to late-August, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Hoskins has a Grade 2 UCL sprain in his left thumb, an injury he suffered while applying a tag during Saturday's loss to the Marlins. Andrew Vaughn started at first base for the Brewers in Monday's win over the Dodgers and could be the primary option at the position while Hoskins is on the shelf. Jake Bauers should also be in the mix for playing time at first base.
