2024 Olympics live updates: Results tracker, Team USA schedule, United States medal count from Paris

The final day of the Paris Olympics has arrived, and it stands to be an exciting morning, highlighted by several women's sporting events as the United States looks to overtake China in the race for gold medals.

Going into Saturday, it was assumed that the men's basketball final between the United States and France was going to be a good one. But it's safe to say no one saw this classic coming. Team USA newbie Stephen Curry took over the game in the fourth quarter, hitting four tremendous shots late in the frame to send the United States to its fifth straight gold medal. LeBron James -- perhaps making his last appearance in international competition -- was named MVP of the tournament. Victor Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4, 20-year-old phenom, scored 26 points for France, which took silver.

On the track, the United States swept the last two races -- the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay -- in varied fashion to extend the long-running dominance of both teams. In the men's race, Rai Benjamin, the 400-meter hurdles gold medalist, held off a challenge from Botswana to secure the win, while in the women's final, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone had built up such a lead that the race was effectively over by the time that anchor runner Alexis Holmes got the baton.

The United States continues to lead the Paris Olympics with 122 total medals, but trails China in the gold medal department 39-38. Overall, China is second overall with 90 medals, while Great Britain (63), the host country of France (62) and Australia (50) complete the top five. The gold medal count could very well come down to the last sporting event of the Games, the women's basketball gold medal game between France and the United States, the winners of 60 consecutive Olympic contests dating back to the Barcelona Games in 1992.

The Paris Games run until Aug. 11, and on this page, CBS Sports will be tracking the entire event from the perspective of the United States. You will find everything you need to know about Team USA's performances from gold-medal victories and record-breaking efforts to fun moments and (unfortunately some) crushing defeats.

Check out the key links below for everything you need to know about the Olympics, while the live updates further down the page will chronicle every important moment and medal opportunity from Team USA over the course of these games.

🥇 Women's Basketball: U.S. wins thriller over France to capture eighth straight Olympic gold

The U.S. women's basketball team overcame some unexpected adversity from a tenacious French team but held on and extended its gold medal streak to eight in a row with a 67-66 victory in Sunday morning's championship game, the final event of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Americans have won 61 straight Olympic games dating back to 1992 Games in Barcelona, where the gold was won by the Unified Team.

The U.S. was plagued by turnovers in the early going and the game reached halftime tied at 25. It stayed nip and tuck through the third quarter and into the fourth before a chaotic final minute in which France's Gabby Williams hit a 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds to trim the hosts' deficit to 65-64.

Kahleah Copper was fouled on the subsequent inbound play and hit two free throws to make it 67-64 and France came down for a desperation possession that ended when Williams hit another jumper. But she was standing on the line when she took the shot, making it a two-pointer that provided the final margin.

"It's France's identity and it's also our identity," coach Cheryl Reeve said, "and that's why it was such a dogfight."

🥈 Track & Field: Shelby McEwen leaps to dramatic silver in men's high jump

Second-time Olympian Shelby McEwen leaped his way into a surprise silver medal for the U.S. in the men's high jump competition, clearing a personal-best 2.36 meters before losing in a jump-off for gold.

Neither of the co-champions from the Tokyo Games three years ago -- Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim or Stefano Sottile -- was able to go higher than 2.34 meters. McEwen and New Zealand's Hamish Kerr each cleared 2.36 in one try before each failed at 2.38, which is roughly equivalent to 7 feet, 9.5 inches.

McEwen missed on three straight attempts at 2.38 while Kerr missed twice and then essentially conceded the third jump, running under the bar on his third try. That created the possibility of a shared gold, but McEwen and Kerr opted instead for a makeshift sudden-death jump-off for the top podium step.

McEwen and Kerr each failed at 2.38 and 2.36 before the bar was lowered again to 2.34, where McEwen missed again, and Kerr cleared to end the duel.

A Mississippi native, McEwen had never fared better than fifth place in three tries at world championship competitions and was 12th in the Tokyo Games. He was flawless in his first four jumps over four consecutively higher bars on Saturday, then cleared 2.34 in his third attempt.

No American had medaled in the event since Eric Kynard won gold at London in 2012.

🥇 Track & Field: United States wins eighth straight women's 4x400-meter relay in dominant fashion

Breaking an American record that stood for 36 years, the United States won its eighth consecutive gold medal in the women's 4x400-meter relay crossing the finish line in 3:15.27, 0.10 shy of the world record and more than 4 seconds faster than runner-up Netherlands. Shamier Little ran a strong opening leg, but Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone -- fresh off setting a world record in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday -- blistered the field with a 47.71-second leg that put the U.S. so far ahead the camera operator had to zoom out to see the remainder of the field.

Gabby Thomas, who already won the 200 meters and 4x100-meter relay in Paris, pushed the Americans further ahead in the third leg with Alexis Holmes running anchor to clinch the gold medal.

With the men also gold just minutes earlier, the United States swept the 4x400-meter relays for the third straight Olympics and sixth time in the last eight Summer Games.

🥇 Track & Field: Rai Benjamin anchors Americans to Olympic record in 4x400-meter relay

There were no hurdles in the way for Rai Benjamin on Saturday as he anchored the United States to one of the most thrilling finishes on the track in the 2024 Paris Olympics, a gold medal victory in the men's 4x400-meter relay by 0.10 over Botswana. The Americans set an Olympic record crossing the finish line in 2:54.43 with Benjamin's 43.13-second final leg being just enough to stay ahead of Botswana's Letsile Tebogo, who won gold in the 200 meters two days earlier.

Christopher Bailey started the race putting the Americans in second after the first leg, but a strong lap from Vernon Norwood and perfect handoff to Bryce Deadmon pushed the United States into the lead with Benjamin, who set a world record in the 400-meter hurdles Friday, bringing home gold for the second straight day.

Quincy Wilson, the 16-year-old Maryland high school sensation who entered the Paris Games as the youngest male U.S. track Olympian in history, will also receive a gold medal as he competed for the Americans during the 4x400m heat round.

The United States has won three straight gold medals in the men's 4x400m along with nine of the last 11 dating back to 1984.

🥇 Women's Soccer: USWNT take home gold for the fifth time

It took a second-half goal from Mallory Swanson to seal the deal for the United States women's national team after an uneven opening 45 minutes, but Team USA got it done, defeating Marta and Brazil to win gold. The gold medal is the team's first since 2012 after taking bronze at the Tokyo Games and missing the medal stand entirely in 2016.

The gold medal match also marks the end of legendary Brazilian Marta's international career. After receiving a two-game suspension for a red card during the final group stage match, the fact that Marta returned tot he field at all was thanks to Brazil's unlikely run to the finals. She entered the match at the hour mark, but was unable to turn the tide for Brazil.

The win means Emma Hayes starts her tenure with the USWNT in perfect fashion. She officially took charge of the team with only two matches to prepare for this tournament, and worked to manage expectations during the build-up to the games. The era of managed expectations is now officially over. After a disappointing round of 16 finish at last summer's World Cup, the USWNT are officially back on top of the world's game.

🥇 Track & Field: Rai Benjamin races to gold in men's 400-meter hurdles

American Rai Benjamin erased three years of disappointment since a narrow loss in the men's 400-meter hurdles at the Tokyo Games, blowing past rival Karsten Warholm at the top of the homestretch and cruising home to gold on Friday afternoon in Paris.

Benjamin broke well and looked comfortable from the start, and reached the stretch ahead of Warholm, who stumbled over the ninth of 10 hurdles to eliminate any chance at a late rally. Benjamin finished in 46.46 seconds, more than a half-second ahead of Warholm, who took silver, and seven-tenths better than Brazil's Alison dos Santos, who got bronze.

The same trio shared the podium in Tokyo, with Warholm beating Benjamin by just more than two-tenths of a second -- 45.94 to 46.17.

It was the fifth time the two have competed since those Olympics, with Benjamin now winning four times. It's also the fifth straight time an American has reached the podium in the event, following Benjamin's silver, Kerron Clement's gold in 2016, and silvers from Clement in 2008 and Michael Tinsley in 2012.

Track & Field: Men's 4x100-meter relay disqualified, again falling short at Olympics

Despite being arguably the best sprinting nation in the world, United States again failed to capture a medal in the men's 4x100-meter relay on Friday. Due to a handoff error after the first leg of the race between Christian Coleman and Kenny Bednarek -- the latter left his position early -- the Americans had to claw from behind and never had enough juice to find a spot on the podium. In fact, the United States would wind wind being disqualified and not receive an official placement in the race.

Amazingly, the U.S. has not found the podium in the men's 4x100-meter relay over the last 20 years, and it has not claimed a gold medal in 24 years dating back to the 2020 Sydney Olympics.

Noah Lyles, winner of the men's 100 meters on Sunday, did not compete alongside his teammates as planned due to a battle with COVID-19.

🥇 Track & Field: Women's 4x100-meter relay team rallies for third gold in four Olympics

The American women overcame a slight hiccup in the baton exchange to get past Great Britain and reclaim the gold medal on Friday in the 4x100-meter relay. Sha'Carri Richardson (running anchor), Gabby Thomas, Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry took home first place in the event after a slow start. Great Britain jumped out to the early lead and held on to it until the final leg where Richardson's explosiveness took over and carried her into the lead as they hit the finish line. It's the United States' third event gold medal in the last four Olympics and seventh gold in the last 11 Summer Games. For Richardson, it was her first career gold medal after missing out on the Tokyo Games three years ago because of a failed drug test for marijuana.
