Before his release on Friday, QB Billy Volek would have earned $2.75 million plus a $750,000 signing bonus this season, according to a tweet by San Diego Union-Tribune writer Michael Gehlken. San Diego signed backup QB Charlie Whitehurst to a two year contract reportedly worth $4 million with a $1 million signing bonus. The swap will save an estimated $1.5 million in cap space for this season.
