Broncos' Damarri Mathis: Won't return Sunday
Mathis (ankle) has been ruled out for the rest of Sunday's preseason game against Arizona, Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports.
Mathis' status for the Broncos' regular-season opener against the Seahawks is also up in the air after he was carted off the field following his injury Sunday. If he weren't able to suit up, Riley Moss would be the likely candidate to serve as Denver's second starting corner opposite Patrick Surtain.

Broncos' Damarri Mathis: Available Sunday
Mathis (back) is active ahead of Sunday's game against the Texans.
Mathis popped up on Denver's injury report Thursday with a back issue, and even after a DNP at Friday's practice, the 24-year-old cornerback is suiting up for Sunday's affair. Expect Mathis to continue playing as a rotational cornerback in the Broncos' secondary in Week 13.

Broncos' Damarri Mathis: Deemed questionable for Week 13
Mathis (back) is questionable to face the Texans on Sunday, Aric DiLalla of the team's official site reports.
Mathis was added to Denver's practice report Thursday as a limited participant due to a back injury and didn't practice at all Friday. That doesn't bode well for his ability to play Sunday, though the Broncos haven't yet ruled him out. Mathis was a starter earlier this season but has been working in a depth role in recent weeks, as he hasn't logged more than 14 percent of the team's defensive snaps in any game since filling a near every-down role in Week 1 through Week 6.

Broncos' Damarri Mathis: Not locked for starting role
Andrew Mason of Denver Sports believes that Mathis isn't locked into a starting role opposite All-Pro corner Patrick Surtain.
Selected by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Mathis started in 11 of 16 games last season and posted 65 tackles and seven pass deflections. He committed four pass-interference penalties in his first start against the Chargers in Week 6 but only gave up three total penalties and one touchdown for the rest of the year. He showed enough improvement for the Broncos to move on from veteran cornerback Ronald Darby, who tore his ACL last October. Mathis should get the initial nod at starting cornerback opposite Surtain as training camp gets underway, but he'll face stiff competition from K'Waun Williams, Essang Bassey and Riley Moss.

Broncos' Damarri Mathis: Unavailable Week 18
Mathis (concussion) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Chargers.
Mathis will now miss his first matchup of the 2022-23 campaign due to the concussion he suffered versus Kansas City in Week 17. Patrick Surtain, K'Waun Williams and Essang Bassey should serve as Denver's top three cornerback options in the regular-season finale.

Broncos' Damarri Mathis: Questionable to play Week 18
Mathis (concussion) has been deemed questionable for Sunday's game against the Chargers.
Mathis sustained a concussion during the Week 17 loss to the Chiefs. The rookie cornerback then missed practice Wednesday before logging back-to-back limited sessions to close Week 18 prep, though it's unclear if he's officially cleared protocols ahead of Sunday's regular-season finale. Should Mathis sit out, then Lamar Jackson could be in line for increased reps alongside top cornerbacks Patrick Surtain and K'Waun Williams against the Bolts.
