Jaguars' Mac Jones: Returning to backup role
Jones will serve as the Jaguars' backup quarterback in Sunday's game against the Texans with Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) having been cleared to start after missing the previous two contests, Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union reports.
While Lawrence could still require offseason surgery to address an AC joint sprain in his non-throwing shoulder, the quarterback looks on track to play through the issue over the final six games of the season after he responded well during a trio of limited practices this week. Jones had filled in for Lawrence as Jacksonville's starter in the two games prior to the team's Week 12 bye, completing 31 of 51 pass attempts (60.8 percent) for 249 yards (4.9 YPA), no touchdowns and three interceptions in losses to the Vikings and Lions. Despite the pair of poor showings, Jones will at least retain the No. 2 job ahead of C.J. Beathard, who is inactive for the Week 13 contest.

Jaguars' Mac Jones: Another forgettable spot start
Jones completed 17 of 29 passes for 138 yards with no touchdowns and one interception while adding two rushes for seven yards in the Jaguars' 52-6 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
Making his second straight spot start for Trevor Lawrence (shoulder), Jones was essentially as ineffective as he had been in Week 10 against the Vikings, with the exception being he threw one fewer interception. Otherwise, the 2021 first-round pick was completely incapable of helping the Jaguars keep up with a juggernaut of a Lions offense that failed to score only on a meaningless end-of-game drive. Jones unsurprisingly focused most of his attention on Brian Thomas and Evan Engram, but he figures to revert to a backup role for a Week 13 home matchup against the Texans on Sunday, Dec. 1 since Lawrence will likely have enough time to get healthy over the Week 12 bye.

Jaguars' Mac Jones: Starting for Lawrence again Sunday
Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said Jones will start Sunday's game against the Lions in Detroit, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
With Pederson ruling Trevor Lawrence out for a second straight game, Jones will get another opportunity to direct the offense, despite struggling to lead productive drives in his first extended action with the Jaguars in Week 10. Jones completed 14 of 22 passes for 111 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in last Sunday's 12-7 loss to the Vikings, committing three turnovers in total after also losing a fumble. The matchup with a Lions defense that hasn't been as strong against the pass (6.5 yards per attempt allowed) or in generating pressure (24 sacks in nine games) as Minnesota is a slightly more favorable one for Jones, but he still profiles as a low-end fantasy option, given his lack of rushing ability and the relatively muted passing production he's shown over his 43 career starts between New England and Jacksonville. Per Demetrius Harvey of The Florida Times-Union, Pederson said Tuesday that he has optimism Lawrence will be able to return following the Jaguars' Week 12 bye, so Jones' run as a starter could come to an end after Sunday.
