Tigers' Jason Foley: To Triple-A IL with shoulder strain
Foley was placed on the 7-day injured list by Triple-A Toledo on Thursday due a right shoulder strain, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Foley struck out nine and permitted just one hit over 6.2 scoreless innings in his first five appearances with Toledo, but he hadn't pitched in several days and now it's been revealed why. It's not clear how long he might be sidelined, but the former Tigers closer will not be an option for the big club for a while.

Tigers' Jason Foley: Sent to minors
The Tigers optioned Foley to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Foley allowed five runs over 7.1 innings during Grapefruit League play but also had a 10:0 K:BB. The 29-year-old led the Tigers with 28 saves last season and had seemed to be firmly in the picture to close heading into 2025, but Detroit will give him time in the minors first to sharpen up. Beau Brieske, Tyler Holton, Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest are among the candidates to see save chances for the Tigers in what looks like a murky situation for fantasy.

Tigers' Jason Foley: Struggling this spring
Through five Grapefruit League appearances, Foley has allowed five runs on eight hits across 4.1 innings.
Foley was solid for the Tigers in 2024, posting a 3.15 ERA and 1.18 WHIP during the regular season and leading the team with 28 saves, so the righty should have a little leeway despite his spring struggles. He still looks like the top candidate for saves in Detroit to start the year, though newcomer Tommy Kahnle is expected to be in the mix along with holdover Tyler Holton, and possibly Will Vest and Beau Brieske as well. Foley will likely need a strong start to his season to solidify his grip on the closer role.

Tigers' Jason Foley: May work in closer committee
With the Tigers adding Tommy Kahnle on Wednesday, Foley may end up splitting closer duties with the newcomer as well as Tyler Holton, Will Vest and Beau Brieske, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Foley easily led the team in saves last season with 28, while Holton had eight. However, manager A.J. Hinch has shown a willingness to play the matchups at the end of games, so the lefty Holton and others could mix in. As for Kahnle, he's been an effective reliever the past few years, though he's never had more than two saves in a season, so he probably will mostly work as a setup man. Foley is the top Detroit reliever to target at this point, but the fluid nature of the club's bullpen may limit his upside to a degree in 2025.

Tigers' Jason Foley: Inks deal with Detroit
Foley agreed to a one-year, $3.15 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
The right-hander receives a significant raise in his first season of arbitration eligibility after recording 28 saves with a 3.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB across 60 innings during the regular season last year. Foley is the early favorite to close games in 2025, but he's not guaranteed the full-time job due to his shaky control and could end up in a high-leverage committee.

Tigers' Jason Foley: Secures one-out save Friday
Foley recorded the last out of Friday's 4-1 win over the White Sox to earn the save,
Tyler Holton was pitching well and possibly could have been asked to retire one more batter with a three-run lead, but the Tigers didn't mess around with a chance to secure an AL Wild Card spot. Foley did his part to kick-start the celebration by securing his 28th save of the season and seventh in the last two weeks. The righty has been a big piece of his team's surprise success this year, pitching to a 3.15 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 60 innings. Foley will clearly have a high-leverage role in the postseason now as well.

Tigers' Jason Foley: Up to 27 saves
Foley earned the save in Thursday's 4-3 win over Tampa Bay, striking out a pair in a scoreless ninth inning.
Foley's now converted 12 of his last 13 save opportunities, allowing just four earned runs over 16.2 innings in that span. The right-hander is up to 27 saves on the season with a 3.17 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB across 59.2 innings.

Tigers' Jason Foley: Secures key save Sunday
Foley pitched a clean ninth inning with a strikeout to record the save in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Orioles.
With Detroit winning and Minnesota losing twice Sunday, the Tigers moved into the last AL wild-card spot for the moment. Foley has been a key part of the team's recent surge, as he now has 26 saves this season, including four in the last week. Expect Detroit to keep leaning on its closer in the final week of the regular season as the club battles for a playoff berth.
