  • Sean Poppen: Released by Seattle

The Mariners released Poppen on Friday.

Poppen gave up four earned runs in 3.1 innings during his first two appearances at Triple-A Tacoma, and he'll now look to latch on with another organization -- likely on a minor-league deal. The 30-year-old righty owns a 5.08 career ERA through 67.1 frames, though he hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022.

  • Mariners' Sean Poppen: Shifts to minors camp

The Mariners reassigned Poppen to minor-league camp Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Poppen appeared in two games for the Mariners this spring, surrendering just one hit while striking out three batters, but he will be removed from big-league camp nonetheless. Poppen logged a 6.33 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over 58.1 innings in Triple-A last season and will presumably begin the season in Tacoma.

  • Mariners' Sean Poppen: Gets NRI from Seattle

Poppen signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Jan. 18 and received an invitation to major-league spring training.

Poppen spent all of last season with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate, accumulating a 6.33 ERA and 1.88 WHIP across 58.1 innings in 47 appearances. Barring a significant turnaround from the 29-year-old righty during spring camp, Poppen should return to Triple-A to begin the new season.

  • Padres' Sean Poppen: Outrighted to Triple-A

Poppen cleared waivers Friday and was sent outright to Triple-A El Paso.

After being claimed off waivers from Arizona in December, Poppen is now set to begin 2023 in the minors. The 28-year-old reliever split time between the major and minor leagues last season, but he will likely need to improve upon his Triple-A stats (4.62 ERA and 1.31 WHIP) in order get back into the Padres' bullpen.

  • Padres' Sean Poppen: Claimed by San Diego

Poppen was claimed off waivers from Arizona by the Padres on Friday.

Poppen recorded a 4.40 ERA and 1.36 WHIP through 28.2 innings in 2022 -- all career bests for the 28-year-old reliever. However, his improved ERA and WHIP was met by a career-low 6.91 K/9, which significantly hinders his fantasy value.

  • Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Called up Wednesday

Poppen was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Poppen made 26 relief appearances for the Diamondbacks earlier in the season and posted a 3.91 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 25.1 innings. He's been in the minors since July 10 but will rejoin Arizona's bullpen after Luis Frias was sent down Wednesday. Poppen has picked up three holds in the majors this year but will likely serve mainly as a middle reliever over the final week of the regular season.

  • Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Returns to Triple-A

The Diamondbacks optioned Poppen to Triple-A Reno on Sunday.

Arizona will swap Poppen out of its bullpen for another right-hander in Edwin Uceta, who was recalled from Reno. Following his June 28 call-up from Triple-A, Poppen appeared in four games for Arizona and gave up four earned runs on five hits and two walks over 3.2 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Sent to Triple-A

Poppen was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday.

The right-hander has a 2.91 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB across 21.2 innings this season, but he'll lose his spot on the big-league roster to Dallas Keuchel, who is starting Sunday against Detroit. Poppen should receive another opportunity in the majors this year given his solid numbers.

  • Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Back from injured list

Poppen (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list Sunday.

Poppen has been sidelined nearly a month by inflammation in his right shoulder, but he'll rejoin the active roster after recently seeing game action at extended spring training. The right-hander pitched well over in first five outings of the season, allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks across six innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Out with shoulder inflammation

Poppen landed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Saturday.

Poppen hasn't pitched as though he's been dealing with an injury this season, as he's allowed just one earned run on four hits in six innings of relief, but he'll miss at least 10 days and potentially more. Corbin Martin was recalled to take Poppen's place in the bullpen.

  • Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Back in big leagues

The Diamondbacks recalled Poppen from Triple-A Reno prior to Sunday's game against the Padres.

Arizona brought up Poppen and Miguel Aguilar to provide fresh arms out of the bullpen for the series finale after Merrill Kelly and Joe Mantiply were moved to the COVID-19-related injured list in corresponding moves. Between stops with Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and Arizona this season, Poppen has made nine relief appearances in the big leagues, posting a 3.97 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across 11.1 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Sent down Friday

Poppen was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Poppen was claimed off waivers by Arizona in early August and allowed a run on five hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings across five appearances. He earned his first career save during that time but will now head to the minors after J.B. Wendelken was claimed off waivers.

  • Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Collects first career save

Poppen earned the save over the Padres on Friday, pitching two scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

The right-hander was brought into the contest in the eighth inning with Arizona holding a three-run lead. After he retired three of the four batters he faced in the frame, manager Torey Lovullo elected to keep Poppen in to close things out in the ninth. The decision paid off when Poppen overcame an error behind him to keep San Diego off the scoreboard. Tyler Clippard remains the favorite for saves out of the Arizona bullpen -- he was unavailable Friday after tossing 23 pitches in a blown save Thursday -- but his stranglehold on the role is certainly not airtight. Poppen could be a dark-horse candidate for saves if Clippard falters, as the former has given up only one run across five frames while posting a 5:0 K:BB in three appearances for the Diamondbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Claimed by Arizona

Poppen was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks on Monday.

The 27-year-old was designated for assignment by the Rays on Friday and didn't make it through the waiver wire unclaimed. Poppen was at Triple-A before being removed from Tampa Bay's 40-man roster, but he'll immediately head to the majors with his new team. He had a 1.59 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 30:11 over 28.1 innings at the Triple-A level for the Rays.

  • Rays' Sean Poppen: Designated for assignment

Poppen was designated for assignment by the Rays on Friday, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports.

Poppen has made three appearances for the Pirates this season and one for the Rays, allowing seven runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings of work. He owns a 6.33 ERA in a small sample of just 21.1 career major-league innings, which may make him an unpopular option on the waiver wire.
