Wendzel was cast off the 40-man roster with the Rangers needing to open up a spot for third baseman Josh Jung (wrist), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list. The 27-year-old Wendzel was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on July 4 after slashing .128/.163/.234 across 49 plate appearances between his two separate stints with the big club earlier this season. He'll likely stick around with Round Rock if he goes unclaimed off waivers.

Wendzel started at third base and went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to Milwaukee.
With Corey Seager resting, Josh Smith started at shortstop, opening up third base for Wendzel. Prior to Wednesday, that used to mean Ezequiel Duran would play the hot corner, but the Rangers optioned the underperforming Duran to Triple-A Round Rock amid a mini roster shakeup. Wendzel is 6-for-40 with a home run, two doubles and two RBI over 23 games this season. Eventually, Josh Jung (wrist) will return to solidify third base.

Wendzel entered Saturday's 8-4 loss to the Reds late and went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run in his lone plate appearance.
The game was out of hand by the time Wendzel replaced second baseman Marcus Semien in the top of the ninth inning. Wendzel will be in line to make his major-league debut in the near future, replacing Justin Foscue (oblique) on the Rangers' roster after Foscue was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday. Wendzel has appeared in nine games so far this season in Triple-A, batting .314 with six extra-base hits, including three homers, while driving in eight runs over 35 at-bats. Rangers' Davis Wendzel: Could make MLB debut
Wendzel has been invited to major-league camp and could make his MLB debut at some point in 2022, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
The Rangers opened an opportunity for several infielders after they traded Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Twins for catcher Mitch Garver. Kiner-Falefa was the presumptive starter at third base, but now Texas is looking at a few potential replacements, including the possibility of Wendzel getting at-bats there in 2022. The 25-year-old infielder batted .238/.346/.399 over a combined 263 plate appearances at Double-A Frisco, Triple-A Round Rock and a rookie-level affiliate while rehabbing a wrist injury.

Wendzel (wrist) started a rehab assignment Aug. 5 with the Rangers' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate and has gone 1-for-11 with an RBI in his first three games.
Wendzel has been on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Frisco since July 18 with a left wrist sprain. Now that he's playing in games again, Wendzel shouldn't be much more than a week or two away from rejoining the Double-A lineup. The 24-year-old posted a .754 OPS in 74 plate appearances for Frisco before heading to the IL.

Wendzel suffered a broken left hamate bone in late May, but he was able to briefly return to Double-A Frisco last week before going back on the IL on Sunday. It's not clear whether the wrist issue is related to the previous injury. Wendzel (hand) began a rehab assignment July 8 with the Rangers' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate. Through his first five games with the ACL club, he has gone 4-for-17 with a home run, a triple, three walks, eight runs and five RBI.
Before heading to the ACL, Wendzel had been sidelined for about six weeks after undergoing surgery on his left hand. The Rangers may keep him in the lower levels of the minors for a few more games so he can get his timing back at the plate, but once Wendzel is deemed ready to go, he'll be reinstated from Double-A Frisco's 7-day injured list.
