Marlins' Connor Gillispie: Solidifying rotation spot
Gillispie allowed one run on two hits and two walks over four innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.
The 27-year-old right-hander built up to 51 pitches (26 strikes) as he looks to secure the spot in the Marlins' rotation created with Edward Cabrera (blister) set to begin the season on the IL. Gillispie made his big-league debut with the Guardians in 2024, working eight innings over three relief appearances with a 2.25 ERA and 8:5 K:BB, and his numbers at Triple-A also showed a bit of promise as he struck out 119 batters in 113.1 innings for Columbus. Pitching for Miami won't provide Gillispie with much fantasy appeal, but he could be worth a dart throw in NL-only and deep mixed formats.

Marlins' Connor Gillispie: In running for rotation spot
Gillispie appears to have an inside track to head into Opening Day as the Marlins' No. 5 starter with Edward Cabrera (finger) likely to begin the season on the injured list, Stephen Strom of Marlins Radio Network reports.
Sandy Alcantara, Ryan Weathers, Cal Quantrill and Max Meyer are locked into spots in the Opening Day rotation, and with Cabrera dealing with a blister and Valente Bellozo and Adam Mazur having already been optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville, Gillispie appears to be the only starting candidate on the 40-man roster still left in big-league camp. The 27-year-old right-hander made his MLB debut in 2024 as a reliever with Cleveland, but he started in 15 of his 27 appearances at Triple-A Columbus last season, logging a 4.05 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 119:48 K:BB in 113.1 innings. He's fared well over his first four outings of the spring with Miami, having yet to allow a hit while issuing one walk and striking out four over eight scoreless innings. Gillispie is scheduled to start Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, and another strong showing could be enough to solidify his spot in the rotation.

Marlins' Connor Gillispie: Claimed by Miami
The Marlins claimed Gillispie off waivers from Atlanta on Tuesday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
Gillispie allowed two runs with an 8:5 K:BB over eight innings covering three appearances with the Guardians in 2024 in his first major-league stint. The 27-year-old split his time between the rotation and bullpen last year at Triple-A Columbus, and it's not clear what role the Marlins have planned for him.

Braves' Connor Gillispie: Pushed off 40-man
Atlanta designated Gillispie for assignment Thursday, Lindsay Crosby of AthlonSports.com reports.
Gillispie signed a one-year deal with Atlanta earlier this winter with hopes of earning a spot in the team's starting rotation or in the bullpen as a long reliever. Instead, he'll be put on waivers to make room for Jurickson Profar, who agreed to a three-year deal with Atlanta on Thursday. The 27-year-old Gillispie fared well in a small sample size with the Guardians last season, allowing just two earned runs over eight innings, and he finished with a 4.05 ERA in Triple-A over 113.1 frames.

Braves' Connor Gillispie: Signs with Atlanta
Gillispie signed a one-year deal with Atlanta on Friday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Gillispie spent most of the 2024 regular-season with Triple-A Columbus, and over 27 games (including 15 starts) he went 5-7 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 119:48 K:BB across 113.1 innings. He did make three appearances for the Guardians during the regular season, and across eight innings of work he allowed two runs on four hits and five walks while striking out eight batters. Gillispie will have an opportunity to carve out a role for himself either in Atlanta's starting rotation or out of the bullpen as a potential long-relief option.

Gillispie tossed two scoreless innings in the first game of Monday's doubleheader versus the Royals, but he's being sent back down ahead of the nightcap. The starter of the second game, Logan Allen, was called up from Triple-A to take Gillispie's roster spot.

The Guardians recalled Gillispie from Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.
The addition of Gillispie gives the Guardians a fresh arm out of the bullpen for Thursday's series finale at Yankee Stadium after long relievers Pedro Avila and Eli Morgan were both needed for two innings in Wednesday's 8-1 loss. Gillispie was up with the Guardians earlier this month and made his MLB debut Aug. 4 against the Orioles, striking out three and allowing one run over three innings.

The Guardians returned Gillispie to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.
Gillespie was sent back to Columbus after he served as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Diamondbacks, only to go unused in both ends of the twin bill. The Guardians have another doubleheader on tap Friday versus the Twins, but Joey Cantillo was called up from Triple-A to serve as the 27th man this time around.

Gillispie was optioned to Triple-A on Monday, but he'll be eligible to rejoin the Guardians two days later since Cleveland is designating him as its 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Diamondbacks. The right-handed reliever will presumably head back to Columbus once the twin bill is completed.

Gillispie was brought up to the big club Sunday and gave up one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over three innings of relief in his MLB debut in Cleveland's 9-5 loss to Baltimore. Since he was unlikely to be available out of the bullpen for at least the next couple of days, Gillispie will move off the active roster to clear room for Logan Allen, who was called up from Columbus to start Monday against the Diamondbacks. Gillispie has logged a 4.01 ERA across 89.2 innings for Columbus this season.
