  • Guardians' Franco Aleman: Optioned to Triple-A

The Guardians optioned Aleman (abdomen) to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday.

Aleman is working his way back from hernia surgery and will start the 2025 campaign in Triple-A once he's fully recovered from the procedure. He could see time in the majors at some point this season should the Guardians need a right-handed option out of the bullpen. Aleman appeared in 24 games at Triple-A during the 2024 regular season and posted a 1.99 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 34:10 K:BB and two saves across 22.2 innings.

  • Guardians' Franco Aleman: Undergoes hernia surgery

Aleman underwent a left hip inguinal hernia repair Wednesday and will be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks.

Aleman was added to the 40-man roster this offseason but had always been likely to begin the season at Triple-A Columbus. He'll be assigned to Columbus once he's fully recovered, though an initial rehab assignment at a lower-level affiliate is possible. Aleman could be an option for the Guardians bullpen at some point this season.

  • Guardians' Franco Aleman: May require surgery

Aleman had an appointment Tuesday to evaluate what may be an inguinal hernia.

Aleman hasn't yet received an official diagnosis, but a hernia and the ensuing procedure to address it would sideline him for an extended period of time and all but eliminate his chances at making the Guardians' Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old righty posted a 1.99 ERA and 1.08 WHIP at Triple-A Columbus last season, but he was limited to just 24 appearances after a lat injury kept him out for three months. He's likely to spend more time in the minors once healthy, though he's a candidate to be called up at some point this summer.

  • Guardians' Franco Aleman: Joins 40-man

The Guardians selected Aleman to their 40-man roster Tuesday.

Aleman has been one of the most dominant relief arms in Cleveland's farm system over the past two years. He didn't allow a single earned run over 24 innings with Double-A Akron in 2023, and he surrendered just eight runs (five earned) in 22.2 Triple-A frames last season. He missed roughly three months of the 2024 campaign due to a lat injury, so the Guardians may still want to give him some more minor-league innings, though his MLB debut may not be too far away if he continues at his current pace.

  • Guardians' Franco Aleman: Comes off IL

Triple-A Columbus reinstated Aleman (lat) from its 7-day injured list Tuesday.

Aleman hasn't pitched for Columbus since May 8 while recovering from a right lat strain and didn't go out on a rehab assignment prior to being activated, so the Guardians could be judicious with his usage coming off the injury. The right-hander had been a dominant relief arm for Columbus before landing on the shelf, logging a 3.38 ERA and a 24:7 K:BB across 13.1 innings over 13 appearances.

  • Guardians' Franco Aleman: Goes on Triple-A IL

Triple-A Columbus placed Aleman on its 7-day injured list Thursday with a right lat strain.

The severity of the injury isn't known, but Aleman still appears likely to be sidelined for multiple weeks while he recovers from the lat strain. The 23-year-old right-handed reliever had put himself on the radar for a promotion to Cleveland by striking out 24 while allowing five earned runs on eight hits and seven walks through 13.1 innings out of the Columbus bullpen this season, but the lat injury will put any talk of a potential call-up on hold indefinitely.
