Diamondbacks' Joe Elbis: Opens year on IL
Elbis was placed on Double-A Amarillo's injured list with an undisclosed injury, Sam Dykstra of MLB Pipeline reports.
Elbis saw an uptick in velocity late in 2024, which can sometimes be the precursor for arm injuries, but it's unclear what his exact injury is or how long he'll be out. The 22-year-old righty logged a 3.39 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 112 strikeouts in 135.1 innings split between High-A and Double-A in 2024.

Diamondbacks' Joe Elbis: Optioned to Double-A
The Diamondbacks optioned Elbis to Double-A Amarillo on Friday.
The 22-year-old was in big-league camp after being added to the 40-man roster in November, but he was never a likely bet to actually make the Opening Day roster. Elbis had a 2.69 ERA in 16 starts at High-A Hillsboro last year before being promoted to Amarillo, where he had a 4.57 ERA across 45.1 innings.

Diamondbacks' Joe Elbis: Shielded from Rule 5 Draft
Elbis was selected to the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster Tuesday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.
Elbis started 24 games between High-A Hillsboro and Double-A Amarillo in 2024, producing a 4.57 ERA with 37 strikeouts over 45.1 innings in eight outings at the latter affiliate. The right-hander will now be protected from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft and he will look to prove himself with Arizona during spring training.

Diamondbacks' Joe Elbis: Makes 2023 debut
Elbis (shoulder) made his season debut at High-A Visalia last Thursday, covering 2.1 innings while allowing two runs on two hits and two walks and striking out one batter.
Elbis didn't make an appearance for Visalia after April 26 of last season due to a shoulder issue, but he received a clean bill of health heading into the 2023 campaign. Due to the development time that he missed out on in 2022, he returned to Visalia and will likely need to string together several quality outings before the Diamondbacks entertain promoting him to High-A Hillsboro.
