Kennedy has gone 1-for-16 with one walk, two runs and one RBI in four games at Triple-A Buffalo since he signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

The righty-hitting Kennedy is better against lefties (career 73 wRC+) than righties (career 55 wRC+), and his lack of defensive utility has left him on the periphery of the Phillies, Tigers and Diamondbacks depth charts in recent years.

Kennedy was designated for assignment Thursday after failing to make the Phillies out of spring training, and he will now seek out an opportunity with another organization rather than heading to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 26-year-old owns a .608 OPS across 149 plate appearances in his big-league career, but he should be able to at least attract a minor-league deal after slashing .274/.375/.460 in Triple-A last year.

The 25-year-old was called up by Philadelphia on Sept. 6 but will return to Triple-A with Edmundo Sosa (back) being activated from the injured list Tuesday. Kennedy appeared in seven games during his brief time in the majors and went 2-for-10 with a double, two walks, two RBI and a run scored.

The official transactions log on MLB.com had listed Kennedy as having been outrighted by the Tigers after clearing waivers, but that was erroneous and has since been deleted. Instead, he's headed to Lehigh Valley, where he will give the Phillies some infield depth. Kennedy has slashed .205/.294/.316 in 46 games over parts of three seasons in the majors.
