Player Outlook
Edouard Julien looked set to become a MLB regular and possibly a star entering last season, but took a big step backward and his ability to keep a regular MLB job is in question. Julien displayed a mix of exceptional plate discipline and power in 2023 with a .381 OBP and .195 ISO. He began 2024 right where he left off with seven home runs and an .820 OPS in the first month. He struggled in May with a .190 batting average and just a .466 OPS and was soon sent to the minors. When he returned to the majors, he wasn't much better the final two months by hitting one home run with a .509 OPS. Strikeouts were Julien's major issue with a 33.9% K%, up from 31.4% in 2023. His Chase Rate increased to 22.6% from 17.3% in 2023. When he did connect, he didn't have as much power as both his hard-hit rate and barrel rate declined. He still has a strong walk rate (11%) and isn't afraid to work deep into the count. His fielding continues to be an issue where he rated as well below average at second base (-6 Defensive Runs Saved), which could limit his opportunities to 1B and DH. He also had just a .583 OPS against left-handed pitching, which means he's likely limited to a platoon. Still, he displayed a rare combination of extreme place discipline and surprising power in 2023, so he could bounce back. However, he's likely going to need to win a role at first base or DH this spring.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Set to make final roster

Julien has unofficially won a spot on Minnesota's 26-man roster to begin the season with Austin Martin optioned to Triple-A, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports. Julien was on the roster bubble, but will make the team with both Royce Lewis and Brooks Lee set to begin the season on the injured list. Julien could get playing time at second base and DH early in the season against right-handed pitching.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Trending toward making roster

Julien appears to likely to win a spot on the major league roster even with Brooks Lee having a strong spring, Matthew Leach of MLB.com reports. Julien is hitting .273 (6-for-22) with a home run and three walks in eight games this spring. Julien is competing with Lee for the starting second base job with Willi Castro also likely to get time at the position. Julien could also get time at first base as well. Julien has struggled in the field this spring (two errors at 2B, one at 1B), however. At this point it's still not clear what the Twins plan to do at second base, but Julien remains in the mix to win a roster spot and could still find playing time against right-handed pitching.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Competing for 2B job

Julien is battling Brooks Lee for the starting second base job this spring with Willi Castro also likely to get time at the position, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. He started at second base in his spring debut Sunday and went 1-for-3. Julien was thought to be a possible platoon partner at first base earlier in the winter, but Minnesota's signing of Ty France likely limits him to second base for any starting job. Julien's role is in flux as he could win the second base job, platoon at first base (or DH or 2B) or even begin the season in the minors. Julien displayed a mix of exceptional plate discipline and power in 2023 with a .381 OBP and .195 ISO, but he struggled with a .615 OPS last season and spent much of the year in the minors.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Sitting versus lefty

Julien is absent from the lineup for Friday's game against the Orioles. It's lefty Cade Povich on the mound for the Orioles, but Julien hardly played lately regardless of the handedness of the opposing pitcher, starting just one of the last nine contests. Ryan Jeffers will be the Twins' designated hitter and will bat seventh.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Losing work vs. righties

Julien is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. Julien looks like he could be moving out of the strong-side platoon role at second base that he's held since receiving a call-up from Triple-A St. Paul in mid-August. He'll hit the bench for the third time in four games Wednesday, with two of those absences coming against right-handed pitchers.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Absent from lineup

Julien is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. • Twins' Edouard Julien: Sitting against lefty

Julien is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta. The lefty-hitting Julien will bow out of the starting nine while Atlanta sends a tough southpaw (Chris Sale) to the hill. Platoon mate Kyle Farmer will fill in for Julien at the keystone.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Racks up four hits in rout

Julien went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs in Wednesday's 11-4 victory against the Padres. Julien entered Wednesday having collected just two hits over 10 at-bats since returning from the minors Aug. 15. He doubled that hit total in the rout over the Padres, notching his first four-hit game since August of last year. He's gaining some traction in the Twins' lineup, starting four of the team's past six games with Brooks Lee on the injured list due to a shoulder injury.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Retreats to bench

Julien is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies. Following his promotion from Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday, Julien started at second base for both games of the Twins' series with the Brewers, going 1-for-4 with a pair of walks. Though he should have a regular spot in the lineup against right-handed pitching while the Twins are without Royce Lewis (groin) and Carlos Correa (heel), the lefty-hitting Julien will likely sit frequently against left-handers. Julien will cede the keystone to Brooks Lee on Monday while the Twins take on southpaw Ranger Suarez.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Officially demoted to Triple-A

The Twins optioned Julien to Triple-A St. Paul on Monday. Julien put up a 132 OPS+ last season as a rookie and opened the 2024 campaign as the Twins' leadoff man against right-handed pitching. While he started off with an .830 OPS in April this season, he posted a .482 OPS with a 36.5 percent strikeout rate since May 1. Julien could regain a regular role with Minnesota later this season, but he'll head to St. Paul for now as he looks to get back on track. Willi Castro will likely take over as the Twins' primary second baseman, with Kyle Farmer being mixed in against lefties.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Demotion could be coming

Julien had a meeting with manager Rocco Baldelli and subsequently met with teammates after Sunday's win over the Astros, which could indicate the second baseman is headed to Triple-A St. Paul as Royce Lewis (quadriceps) is set to return from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Julien hit out of the No. 9 hole Sunday and went 0-for-2 with a walk, which dropped his season slash line to .207/.309/.367 through 58 games. The 25-year-old has a 34 percent strikeout rate this year, and the return of Lewis provides an opportunity for Julien to get back on track in a lower-pressure environment. The Twins have yet to make an official announcement regarding Lewis and who he'll replace on the MLB roster.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: On base three times in loss

Julien went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 10-8 loss to the Blue Jays. The 25-year-old Canadian put together a solid performance in Toronto as the Twins' leadoff hitter. The multi-hit performance was Julien's first since April 27, snapping a slump that had seen him hit just .097 (3-for-31) over the prior 12 games, while the steal was his fourth of the season, establishing a new career high after he swiped three in 109 games last year as a rookie.

Julien went 1-for-2 with two RBI, two walks and a stolen base in Friday's win over Boston. Julien was stuck in an 0-for-11 drought since his last hit April 27. The lefty slugger drove in a run with a third-inning single before drawing a bases-loaded walk in the seventh. Julien went 2-for-4 with two solo homers in Thursday's win over the White Sox. Julien has shown good power early in the season with seven home runs and a .513 SLG, with three of those long balls coming in his past four contests. He's hitting just .213 and has a 31.9 percent strikeout rate, which is a marginal increase on his strikeout rate from last season.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Belts fifth homer

Julien went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and two RBI in Monday's win over the White Sox. Julien doubled in a run during the fourth inning before capping off the 7-0 victory with a solo shot in the seventh. He was stuck in a 3-for-24 skid over his previous seven games since his last long ball April 13. Julien continues to flash his power potential with five home runs and eight extra-base hits through 81 plate appearances. However, his inconsistency has led to a .211/.300/.465 slash line.
