The Phillies released Castillo on Aug. 12.
Castillo logged a 4.43 ERA over 20.1 innings at the big-league level with the Royals in 2023, but he didn't make any appearances for the Phillies in 2024 after being added to the organization's 40-man roster over the offseason. The right-hander was outrighted off the roster earlier this month and was eventually cut loose after compiling a 7.62 ERA over 52 innings this season between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and Double-A Reading.

Red Sox's Max Castillo: Nabbed off waivers by Boston
The Red Sox claimed Castillo off waivers from the Royals on Tuesday.
Castillo has collected a career 5.43 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 47:24 K:BB in 59.2 innings over parts of two seasons in the majors, making six starts and 15 relief appearances over that span. It's not clear which role the Red Sox have planned for him. The 24-year-old does have an option year remaining, so Boston could stash him at Triple-A Worcester if Castillo doesn't earn an Opening Day roster spot.

Castillo has thrown 17 innings as a long reliever for the Royals this season, holding his own with a 4.24 ERA despite a low 13.7 percent strikeout rate. He's likely limited to a low-leverage role unless he can start to miss more bats. Jonathan Heasley was optioned in a corresponding move.

Royals' Max Castillo: Struggles as long reliever
Castillo (0-1) took the loss in Sunday's 5-2 loss against the White Sox. He allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out one over 4.2 innings.
Castillo followed Carlos Hernandez, who pitched the first two frames as an opener Sunday. After a strong start to the season with a 2.89 ERA and eight strikeouts through 9.1 innings, Castillo was knocked around by the White Sox. He was tagged for a solo homer by Luis Robert in the fourth, then gave up three runs in the fifth inning as Chicago took a 4-2 lead. Though Castillo has gotten a few looks as a long reliever, his 5.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 5.79 K/9 leaves him firmly outside of fantasy considerations.

Royals' Max Castillo: Works in bulk relief
Castillo allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Brewers. He did not factor in the decision.
Castillo worked as a bulk reliever behind opener Josh Taylor. The damage against Castillo amounted to an Owen Miller solo home run and a Tyrone Taylor RBI single. In two long-relief outings, Castillo owns a 3.86 ERA, but it comes with a 1.86 WHIP and 5:5 K:BB through seven innings. Considering he had a 9:10 K:BB through 24.1 innings with Triple-A Omaha prior to his call-up, it appears the right-hander could still benefit from some time working on his control in the minors.

Royals' Max Castillo: Joins big club
The Royals recalled Castillo from Triple-A Omaha ahead of Sunday's game against the Athletics.
Castillo will provide the Royals with a fresh arm capable of covering multiple innings out of the bullpen after Kansas City needed six relievers to cover 8.2 frames between the first two games of the series with Oakland. The Royals still plan on developing Castillo as a starter, so he'll likely be in line for only a brief stay with Kansas City before returning to Triple-A and slotting back into the Omaha rotation.
