Gleyber Torres closed out the final six weeks of the 2024 regular season on a heater in slashing .313/.386/.454 over his final 39 contests after the Yankees moved him back to the leadoff spot. It was too little, too late in terms of his overall fantasy impact last season, however, as Torres finished the campaign with 10 fewer home runs, nine fewer stolen bases and nearly 100 fewer points of OPS from the previous season. It was an ill-timed walk year, and unfortunately inconsistency has been a staple during Torres' career. Torres does still offer plus power potential at second base, but with 15 homers in 2024 and nine in 2021, there are no assurances there, particularly when factoring in his departure from Yankee Stadium to Detroit.

  • Tigers' Gleyber Torres: Back in lineup at DH

Torres (quadricep) will serve as Detroit's designated hitter and No. 3 batter in Monday's Grapefruit League game against Pittsburgh, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Torres is back in the lineup one day after being scratched from the starting nine ahead of the Tigers' game against the Orioles due to a right quad bruise. Though Torres will be eased back into action in a non-defensive role, he'll presumably be ready to resume playing second base within the next few days.

  • Tigers' Gleyber Torres: Scratched from Sunday's lineup

Torres was scratched from the lineup ahead of Sunday's spring game against the Orioles due to a right quadriceps contusion. It's likely a precautionary move from the Tigers, but Torres will probably undergo further testing. The second baseman agreed to a one-year, $15 million contract with Detroit in December after playing for the Yankees for the past seven seasons. He finished the 2024 regular season with a .257/.330/.378 slash line, 15 home runes and 63 RBI across 665 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Gleyber Torres: Having strong spring

Through 10 Grapefruit League games, Torres is batting .318 with a 1.221 OPS and three home runs. The long balls are particularly encouraging for Torres, as he dipped to 15 homers in 2024 after having more than 20 in each of the previous two seasons. The 28-year-old's career high in home runs is 38, which he recorded back in 2019, and coming anywhere near that total in 2025 would be a welcome development for his fantasy prospects -- and would also be a major surprise. Either way, Torres figures to be a key offensive piece for the Tigers and should see plenty of playing time as long as he stays healthy.

  • Tigers' Gleyber Torres: Hits first spring home run

Torres went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and two total runs scored in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. Torres is off to a bit of a slow spring start with a .182 batting average through five appearances, but he is at least on the board with a home run. Even if he scuffles throughout Grapefruit League play, the 28-year-old will fill a key role with the Tigers and see regular playing time at second base.

  • Tigers' Gleyber Torres: Should have big offensive role

Torres is expected to play nearly every day at second base and bat in the top half of Detroit's lineup, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Torres seemed set for a key role when he agreed to a one-year, $15 million deal back in December, and early reports out of camp support this notion. He was the only player taking reps at second base Monday and the team expects him to hit high in the order. Torres served as the Yankees' leadoff man for 56 games during the 2024 regular season, though he also regularly batted fifth or lower in New York's stacked lineup. The Tigers may install Torres as their leadoff hitter, but even if he's not hitting first, the 28-year-old appears primed to fill a key run-producing spot most days. He could be poised for a big season with his new club.

  • Tigers' Gleyber Torres: Agrees to deal with Detroit

The Tigers agreed to terms with Torres on a contract Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com, it's a one-year, $15 million deal. He's coming off a down year, having posted a .709 OPS with 15 homers over 154 regular-season contests, but Torres collected an .800 OPS with 25 long balls in 2023. Torres is expected to play second base for the Tigers, per Rogers, which means Colt Keith will shift either to third base or first base.
