Red Sox's Trevor Story: Officially activated
Story (shoulder) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Saturday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Story draws the start at shortstop and will bat seventh for the Red Sox on Saturday, marking the 31-year-old's first MLB showing since suffering a dislocated shoulder in early April. Story appeared in four rehab games prior to being activated and notched four hits in his final minor-league outing.

This is a big surprise, as it wasn't clear that Story would be able to return so quickly after beginning a rehab assignment Sept. 1. He played four games at Triple-A and hit .375 with one steal and zero home runs. The plan is for Story to play shortstop and Ceddanne Rafaela to play second base down the stretch.

Story (shoulder) started at shortstop and went hitless in three at-bats during a rehab game for Triple-A Worcester on Monday.
Story played the field for the first time while on rehab and was pulled after five innings. He served as the designated hitter in his first rehab outing Sunday and has gone 2-for-7 between the two games. Story likely needs a couple of weeks to get his timing back at the plate, but he could be available over the second half of September as the Red Sox make a push for the postseason.

While Cotillo fails to provide much substance on the progress of Story's rehab, it's positive news that the veteran shortstop hasn't suffered any setbacks to this point. It remains a mystery as to whether the 31-year-old will be cleared for action down the stretch of the 2024 season, though he'd likely need to see reps against live pitching soon to have a chance at a return this year.

Red Sox's Trevor Story: Taking batting practice Monday
Story (shoulder) will take batting practice on the field Monday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Story underwent surgery for a fractured left shoulder in mid-April and the feeling at the time was that it was likely to end his 2024 campaign. However, the shortstop's rehab has come along more quickly than expected and Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that he's "truly believing" Story will make it back before the end of the season. There are still many hoops for Story to jump through, of course, and there is no timetable for his return, but it's an exciting development for the Red Sox.
