Cubs' Drew Pomeranz: Added to roster
The Cubs selected Pomeranz's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.
The Cubs acquired Pomeranz via trade from the Mariners on Monday with the intention of adding him to the big-league roster, and the move is now official. He posted a 4.66 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB across 9.2 innings at the Triple-A level this season. If and when Pomeranz makes an appearance for the Cubs, it will be his first at the major-league level since 2021.

Cubs' Drew Pomeranz: Acquired by Cubs
The Mariners traded Pomeranz to the Cubs on Monday for cash considerations, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Pomeranz signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners in March and appeared in nine games for Triple-A Tacoma, logging a 4.66 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB across 9.2 innings. Mariners' Drew Pomeranz: Back in Seattle
Pomeranz signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Pomeranz spent the spring with Seattle, allowing four runs in 7.2 innings, but he was released by the club Sunday. After testing the open market for a few days, the 36-year-old lefty will now return to the Mariners, though he's likely to only serve as depth for Triple-A Tacoma, given the fact he hasn't appeared in the majors since 2021.

Pomeranz cleared waivers Friday and elected to become a free agent, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Just days after signing a big-league deal with the Giants last Friday, Pomeranz was DFA'd by the club Tuesday and will now re-enter free agency rather than joining Triple-A Sacramento. The 35-year-old southpaw allowed six earned runs in nine innings with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2021. Pomeranz was released by the Dodgers on Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Pomeranz had an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract and has exercised it. The veteran left-hander allowed six runs over five innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City, although he did have a 7:1 K:BB and was touching 94 mph with his fastball, per Ardaya. He should be able to land on his feet in another organization.

Pomeranz needed 25 pitches just to retire two of the five batters he faced in his first rehab outing at Triple-A and the second of his assignment overall after he previously tossed a scoreless inning for Single-A Lake Elsinore last Friday. Pomeranz hasn't pitched in a big-league game since 2021 and has encountered multiple setbacks this season while attempting to return. The lefty reliever underwent an arthroscopic procedure in late May to clean up "junk" in his throwing elbow but has since resumed a throwing program. However, Pomeranz hasn't yet tossed any bullpens and will need to restart a minor-league rehab assignment before potentially being activated from the 60-day IL, so he remains at least several weeks away from pitching for the Padres. The veteran did say that he foresees returning this season, stating, "I'm determined to get back to where I was. There's still time left."

Padres' Drew Pomeranz: Undergoes elbow 'cleanup'
Padres manager Bob Melvin said Pomeranz underwent "cleanup surgery" on his elbow Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
It sounds like arthroscopic surgery, which carries a far shorter timetable than other elbow procedures and will keep hope alive that Pomeranz can be a contributor at some point in 2023. Pomeranz opened the season on the 15-day injured list while he continued to recover from left elbow flexor tendon surgery, and though he started up a rehab assignment April 18, he made just three appearances before being shut down after experiencing renewed discomfort in his surgically repaired arm. He was idle for about a week before he resumed throwing again, and he now appears ready to test himself in a competitive setting. Expect Pomeranz to make at least a couple of appearances for El Paso before the Padres consider activating him.
