Yasmani Grandal: Leaving Red Sox, likely to retire
Grandal is likely to be granted his release from the Red Sox in the coming days and is expected to retire from professional baseball, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Grandal remained unsigned throughout the winter before catching on with the Red Sox on a minor-league deal in mid-April. He reported to Triple-A Worcester and was hopeful to eventually earn a look with the big club, but despite slashing a respectable .256/.372/.397 over 94 plate appearances, Grandal was bypassed for a promotion while the Red Sox were content to proceed with Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong as their two catchers. Worcester has placed the 36-year-old on its restricted list, so he won't count toward the roster until he's officially released. A two-time All-Star, Grandal spent parts of 13 seasons in the big leagues from 2012 through 2024 with the Padres, Dodgers, Brewers, White Sox and Pirates, slashing .236/.345/.424 with 194 home runs, 592 RBI and 535 runs.

Red Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Signs minors deal with Boston
Grandal signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Grandal spent all of last year with the Pirates, where he slashed .228/.304/.400 with nine homers and 27 RBI across 243 plate appearances. The Red Sox are a bit short on catcher depth now that Connor Wong (finger) is on the IL, so they'll bring in Grandal to give them a bit more security behind the plate. The 36-year-old veteran will presumably report to Triple-A Worcester and may be able to earn a big-league spot with a hot start in the minors.

It's Grandal's first multi-hit performance since Aug. 21, and his first three-hit effort since Aug. 4. On the season, the 35-year-old sports a .228/.304/.400 slash line with nine homers and 27 RBI in 215 plate appearances.

Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Starting, but likely to lose work
Grandal will start at catcher and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Marlins.
Though he's included in the starting nine Monday, Grandal is expected to move into the No. 2 role at catcher after the Pirates reinstated top backstop Joey Bart from the injured list Friday. Grandal is slashing .333/.469/.569 since the beginning of August, but his .681 OPS on the season still lags well behind Bart's mark of .848.

Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Taking seat Sunday
Grandal is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians.
Grandal will hit the bench for a second straight day as the Pirates give youngster Henry Davis another turn behind the dish. The two will likely be deployed in a fairly even timeshare behind the plate during the final month of the season.

Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Collects three hits
Grandal went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored during Sunday's 6-5 loss to Arizona.

Since the All-Star break, Grandal is 5-for-16 with two doubles, a home run and as many walks as he has strikeouts (two).

Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Pops fourth homer
Grandal went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 5-3 win over the Astros.
Grandal got the Pirates on the board with a sixth-inning solo shot. He's hit two of his four homers in July, going 6-for-29 (.207) over 10 contests this month. The catcher has a poor .184/.221/.319 slash line with 18 RBI, 12 runs scored and one stolen base over 150 plate appearances. Barring a drastic improvement in performance, Grandal figures to remain in the backup catcher role behind Joey Bart.
